In late September, Fu Zuoyi and his entourage arrived in Guisui as scheduled. That night, Zhang Shizhen and others had prepared accommodation for Fu Zuoyi at the Wanjiachun Hotel. However, in the middle of the night, a violent explosion suddenly occurred in the hotel.
The sound of the explosion alarmed the entire city, and Zhang Qingen and the three took advantage of the chaos to escape. The next day, they found out that Fu Zuoyi was not killed in the explosion and was unharmed.
It turned out that Fu Zuoyi did not stay in the hotel that night, but was invited by the local civil official to go to talk freely. It was this accident that allowed him to escape.
Zhang Qingen Baotou waited for an opportunity to commit murder again
Although the assassination plan in Guisui failed, Zhang Qingen did not give up. He learned that Fu Zuoyi was going to Baotou, so he quickly rushed to Baotou with his accomplices, preparing to carry out a second operation there.
In order not to repeat the mistakes of the past, Zhang Qingen made sufficient preparations this time. He contacted Zhao Siwu, an insider of the military command lurking in Baotou, and asked Zhao Siwu to pay close attention to Fu Zuoyi's whereabouts.

Zhang Qingen was very excited when he learned about it, thinking that this was a great opportunity created for him by God. He led his accomplices to infiltrate Baotou City, preparing to commit murder when Fu Zuoyi was staying at the garrison headquarters.
However, Zhang Qingen ignored a key factor - the explosion of the Wanjiachun Hotel made Fu Zuoyi's entourage Zhang Shizhen extremely vigilant.
In order to protect Fu Zuoyi's safety, Zhang Shizhen deliberately spread the false news that Fu Zuoyi would spend the night at the garrison headquarters, but secretly made other arrangements.
That night, Zhang Qingen and his entourage successfully infiltrated the garrison headquarters and drew their guns to prepare for the assassination, but found that the target was not here at all. They then encountered the guards, and a fierce gun battle ensued.
After a hard battle, Zhang Qingen was finally killed, and the other two accomplices were killed and wounded. In this way, Chiang Kai-shek's second assassination plan was completely defeated.
Zhang Shizhen's advance arming and alert response saved Fu Zuoyi from a danger to his life. And Zhang Qingen paid with his life for his recklessness and carelessness.
Chiang Kai-shek's assassination plan fell through
The defeat of Zhang Qingen and his party in Baotou marked the complete bankruptcy of Chiang Kai-shek's plan to assassinate Fu Zuoyi. After that, Chiang Kai-shek had no other action but to watch the situation become more and more unfavorable for him.
In October 1949, the Chinese People's Liberation Army launched the Liaoshen Campaign, quickly conquering Jinzhou, Shenyang and other important places, and the Kuomintang army was completely defeated in northeast China. Immediately afterwards, the People's Liberation Army went to the Pingjin Line and went straight to the North China Plain.
In November, Shijiazhuang and Taiyuan were captured one after another, and Chiang Kai-shek's last stronghold in North China, Beiping, was also defeated. Fu Zuoyi led his troops to revolt, clearing the biggest obstacle for the People's Liberation Army to march into Beiping.
In December 1949, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) went to the Central Plains to conquer strategic locations such as Wuhan and Nanjing. In January 1950, the army advanced along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, conquered Nanjing and Hangzhou, and completely drove Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government out of the mainland.
In the face of this series of heavy blows, Chiang Kai-shek had no choice but to flee to Taiwan by boat on January 7, 1950, with the remnants of his army and government personnel.
In this way, Chiang Kai-shek's assassination plan not only failed to get rid of Fu Zuoyi, but hastened his downfall on the mainland. Fu Zuoyi retired and later served as vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
