Heavy rainfall and convection refer to weather phenomena such as large amounts of precipitation and strong thunder, lightning, gales, hail, etc., which occur in a short period of time, usually due to the interaction of warm and humid air currents and cold air.

The forecast of the Central Meteorological Observatory pointed out that during the day from 3 to 5 May, there will be moderate to heavy rain in the eastern part of southwest China, Jianghan, Jianghuai, Jiangnan and southern China, of which there will be heavy rain in some areas of Jiangnan and southern China, and heavy rain in central and southern Hunan, central and southern Jiangxi, central and northern Guangxi, and central and western Guangdong; the cumulative precipitation in some areas will be 80~160 mm, and the local precipitation in central and northern Guangxi and central and western Guangdong will reach 250~350 mm. Severe convective weather refers to the disastrous weather with short-term heavy precipitation, thunderstorms and strong winds, tornadoes, hail and squall lines, which are characterized by short duration, strong localization, strong factor changes and great destructive power. When the cold air from the north invades the warm and humid air mass in the south in an appropriate way, it will form a particularly strong vertical movement in some areas, that is, the strong convective weather system, so that the water vapor and energy accumulated in the air can be released in a short time, so that the strong convective weather such as strong thunder, thunderstorms, strong winds and even hail will be formed.
The reason for the frequent occurrence of strong convective weather in the south recently is that around April this year, the subtropical high is stronger, and the warm and humid airflow in the north of the subtropical high is more active.
There is no doubt that although the rain and strong convection in the south have weakened for a short time, in the second half of the May Day holiday, there will still be a wide range of heavy rainfall and strong convective weather in the south again, and there may be short-term heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, strong winds or hail, etc., which need to be taken precautions.
