author:TechNode

Genesis has a new performance sub-brand that can compete with Mercedes-Benz AMG and BMW M, and its name is Magma. Magma was unveiled at the 2024 New York Auto Show last month and showcased the GV60 Magma concept. At the 2024 Beijing Motor Show this week, it continued the original concept with a new design based on the Electrified G80.

Dubbed the G80 EV Magma, the high-performance sedan is more extreme than the previous GV60-based concept car. It also launched a new color, Acme Blue, exclusive to the Chinese market, inspired by the blue tones in a blazing flame.

The G80 EV Magma stands out for its low body stance and widened chassis. The grille and front fascia are unique features of the concept and are connected by pump-air fenders, a new rear fascia, and 21-inch wheels with aerodynamic covers that extend along the rims.

The Genesis has also upgraded the chassis with a sport-tuned suspension that gives the track a wider wheel, plus a powerful brake package with front and rear ventilated rotors. Genesis also says the wheel's lightweight design helps reduce unsprung mass.

For the interior, the designers used a mix of Alcantara, quilted leather and carbon fiber. The carbon fiber is braided in blue to match the exterior.

Powertrain specifications have not yet been disclosed. The standard Electrified G80 comes with an 87.2 kWh battery with a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain in its most powerful configuration, with a maximum output of 365 horsepower.

Genesis also didn't mention production plans for the G80 EV Magma Concept, but a gas-powered G80 Magma Special sedan, shown in New York last month, will be launched in West Asia at some point in the future. Details of the car were not revealed at the time of its debut.

Genesis also showcased an updated version of the Electrified G80 at the Beijing Motor Show. Full details will be reserved until it hits the market later this year, but Genesis confirmed a slightly longer wheelbase in favor of rear-seat passengers, new disc 19-inch wheels, electronically controlled charging port covers, more trim options, and reduced noise, vibration, and harshness levels.

The automaker also showed off an updated version of the GV70 in Beijing. It has made some styling changes and will be available in South Korea next month. A launch in the U.S. is planned for later this year, suggesting that the updated crossover will be available as a 2025 model.
