Wang Yun's family background and early experience
Wang Yun was born in a famous family, and his family has been an official for generations. His ancestral home is in Taiyuan, Bingzhou, and belongs to the northern surname Wang. Since the establishment of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Wang family has always been a well-known local wealthy family, and their children and grandchildren have made small achievements in their careers.
Wang Yun received an excellent education from his family since he was a child, and he is knowledgeable, alert and shrewd. When he was young, he showed radical ideas against the dictatorship of eunuchs, and publicly criticized the corrupt behavior of the eunuch group many times, so he won a high reputation among the government and the opposition. However, this behavior also caused him to suffer repeated setbacks in officialdom, and he was removed from his official position more than once, and even imprisoned for a time.
Despite all the hardships, Wang Yun did not stop there. After the outbreak of the Yellow Turban Uprising, as the assassin of Yuzhou, he fought side by side with famous generals such as Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun, and jointly repelled the local Yellow Turban Army. In 189 AD, a "disaster of the party" provoked by the eunuch Zhang Rang completely changed the trajectory of Wang Yun's life. In order to escape Zhang Rang's persecution, Wang Yun had to temporarily retire and take refuge with Dong Zhuo, who had already controlled the military power in the northwest at that time.
At first, Wang Yun just wanted to use Dong Zhuo's power to settle the current predicament for himself. But as time went by, he found that Dong Zhuo was too rampant, and he was simply the culprit of the disaster to the country and the people. As a result, Wang Yun began to brew a big plan, he wanted to use Dong Zhuo's power to get rid of the eunuch group first, and then Dong Zhuo himself, so as to sweep away the two major disasters of the Han Dynasty in one fell swoop.
Wang Yun's process of getting rid of Dong Zhuo
In the spring of 192 A.D., continuous heavy rain ravaged the Central Plains, and the people were struggling to survive. Wang Yun and others thought that this was a warning from God, Dong Zhuo's qi was exhausted, and it was time to get rid of this heinous tyrant.
In order to smoothly implement this plan, Wang Yun first secretly recruited important cronies under Dong Zhuo's command, such as Huang Wan, the captain of Sili, Sun Rui, and Yang Zan of Shangshu, to conspire against Dong Zhuo. And the most critical step is to win over Dong Zhuo's henchman General Lu Bu.
Lü Bu was originally a native of Bingzhou, who once followed Ding Yuan against Dong Zhuo, and was later captured by Dong Zhuo and worshiped as his godson. Dong Zhuo attached great importance to Lu Bu and entrusted him with important tasks, and Lu Bu also showed loyalty to Dong Zhuo. However, Lu Bu privately committed adultery with one of Dong Zhuo's maids, which made Wang Yun see the flaw.
Wang Yun found Lu Bu and said seductively: "Brother Lu, do you know what Dong Zhuo's intentions are for you? He just wants to use your force to suppress the world, if you don't obey his orders, he will definitely harm you." Besides, if he discovers that you have fornicated with his maid, your life will be put to rest."
Lu Bu was shocked when he heard this, and couldn't help but think: What Wang Yun said is true, Dong Zhuo is indeed a ruthless person, if I lose my eyes a little, he will definitely harm me.
Wang Yun saw that Lu Bu was shaken, and took advantage of the victory to pursue: "Brother Lu, you and I are both from the state, and I regard you as brothers. If you can get rid of Dong Zhuo, a sinner, I should fully support you and create a great cause!"
Lu Bu pondered for a moment, and finally made up his mind: "Okay! I should get rid of this tyrannical person for the common people of the world!"
The plan is finalized. Wang Yun arranged for Lu Bu to hold a banquet in Chang'an City to entertain Dong Zhuo, and when he was drunk, Lu Bu took him by surprise and killed Dong Zhuo with a knife.
Wang Yun's new deal after coming to power
On April 23, 192 AD, the "death of Dong Zhuo" planned by Wang Yun finally succeeded. Lu Bu was taken by surprise and stabbed Dong Zhuo to death with a spear in the Weiyang Palace. In this way, this tyrannical man, who was once rampant, finally counted all his crimes and suffered the end he deserved.
With Dong Zhuo's death, Wang Yun and Lü Bu quickly took over the power of Chang'an City. Wang Yun was appointed as the ruling Shang Shuling and was in charge of the imperial government, while Lü Bu was made the Marquis of Wen and appointed as the general of Fenwei, the three divisions of False Jie, and Yibi, in charge of military affairs.
First of all, Wang Yun ordered the announcement that "the first evil has been punished, and the rest will not be prosecuted" in order to stabilize the people's hearts. This move had an immediate effect and quickly calmed the panic of the people in the capital. After all, Dong Zhuo has done evil and committed many crimes over the years, and the people really need a new dynasty of Qingming.
Next, Wang Yun began to work on reorganizing the dynasty. Wang Yun's conflict with the Western Liang army
In June 192 AD, Wang Yun had just gotten rid of Dong Zhuo and regained control of the Chang'an dynasty. However, he was faced with a thorny problem - how to deal with the remnants of the Western Liang Army that had followed Dong Zhuo.
This Xiliang army was led by Niu Fu, Li Dao, Guo Yan and others, although the main force had been defeated by Huangfu Song, there were still tens of thousands of horses stationed in the Guanzhong area. They were wary of Wang Yun's coming to power, for fear of retaliation and liquidation.
Wang Yun himself was wary of this army. After all, they were Dong Zhuo's henchmen and dead, and they had committed many crimes, and if they were not disbanded, they would definitely become a hidden danger to his new dynasty.
However, Wang Yun seems to be indecisive in dealing with this issue. He was neither willing to completely disband the Xiliang army, nor did he want to let them be stationed on the spot, for fear of causing turmoil.
For a time, Wang Yun took a cold attitude towards Xiliangjun. He believed that as long as they were not provoked, they would not rebel.
However, it backfired. The Western Liangjun became more and more dissatisfied with Wang Yun's attitude, believing that he would be unfavorable to them sooner or later. So, they began to brew an attack on Wang Yun.
First of all, a Western Liang army led by Niu Fu launched an attack on Wang Yun's army in the Hedong region. Wang Yun ordered Lü Bu to send troops to attack, but Lü Bu's subordinate Li Su was defeated by Niu Fu.
Niu Fu could have taken advantage of the victory to pursue, but he panicked because of a "night terror" incident and was eventually killed by his cronies.
As soon as Niu Fu died, the main force of the Xiliang army was concentrated in the hands of Li Dao and Guo Yan. They originally wanted to surrender to Wang Yun, but Wang Yun refused their request to surrender on the grounds that "no amnesty can be granted twice a year".
As a result, Li Dao, Guo Yan and others were forced to take the offensive approach. They joined forces with the famous strategist Jia Xu to launch an attack on Chang'an.
Although Wang Yun sent Lü Bu to resist, Lü Bu's army was no match for the Xiliang army at all. In the end, Chang'an City fell, Wang Yun was killed, and Emperor Xian of Han also fell into the hands of Li Dao and others.
In this way, Wang Yun fell into a rupture and conflict with the Xiliang army because of improper handling, and finally caused his own destruction. If he could properly appease the Xiliang Army in time, maybe there would not be such an ending.
Wang Yun's Downfall and Historical Evaluation
In June 192 AD, the conflict between Wang Yun and the Western Liang army was already heating up. Li Dao, Guo Yan and others received the support of Jia Xu and led the iron cavalry army to Chang'an.
In the face of the menacing Xiliang army, Wang Yun could only count on the strength of the Bingzhou army led by Lu Bu. However, Lü Bu's army was no match for the Western Liang army at all. The two sides duel under the city of Chang'an, and the state army was defeated and retreated.
In the end, the Western Liang army captured the city of Chang'an. Wang Yun was captured and tortured in public. Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty also fell into the hands of Li Dao and others, and was forced to move east to Xuchang.
In this way, Wang Yun's first reputation fell to Huangquan. This hero who once got rid of Dong Zhuo with his wits finally lost his future because of his short-sightedness and arrogance.
Regarding Wang Yun's ending, later history books gave an interesting evaluation: "If you don't follow expedient measures, you don't follow the group." ＂
To put it simply, after Wang Yun dealt with power, he was too rigid and self-serving, and he did not change power, so it was difficult for his subordinates to obey and follow.
Specifically, after Wang Yun got rid of Dong Zhuo, he did make some correct decisions, such as forgiving the old ministry, reusing celebrities, and reducing taxes. However, on the key issue of dealing with the remnants of the Xiliang Army, he seemed to be indecisive and indecisive.
At first, he took a cold attitude towards the Xiliang army, thinking that in this way he could avoid causing unrest. But it backfired, and the Xiliang army became more and more dissatisfied with his attitude, and finally brewed an attack on him.
Later, Xiliangjun took the initiative to surrender to Wang Yun, but he refused on the grounds that "you can't be amnesty twice a year". This is undoubtedly an extremely pedantic approach, which directly forced the Xiliang army to a dead end.
If Wang Yun could properly pacify the Xiliang army in time, maybe there would not be such an ending. But it is clear that he lacked this kind of power skill, and eventually led to his own downfall.
However, it is a bit too simplistic to blame Wang Yun's personal ability. After all, the environment of the era in which he lived was extremely turbulent, and it was difficult for one person to completely control the situation.
