"Fish" and "fishing" are all awarded, and Huali's high-value "research" team grows with dreams

The project team carried out the vaccination promotion of the national agricultural main technology

Chinanews.com, Shanghai News, April 30 (Pan Congcong, Xu Jing) In East China University of Science and Technology, there is such a high-value student innovation and entrepreneurship team: among the 15 team members, there are 7 doctoral students and 4 master's students. Aiming at the national industrial development strategy and focusing on the green development of marine aquaculture, they can not only study high-precision fishery vaccines in the laboratory, but also go deep into the field to promote the transformation and demonstration application of achievements. This is the "National Fishery and Animal Husbandry" project team led by Wu Xiao and Zhang Boya, doctoral students of the School of Bioengineering of East China University of Science and Technology.

At the China International College Student Innovation Competition (2023), the team's project stood out from many entries and won the gold medal in the Youth Red Dream Building Journey track. For team members, "every year there are fish every year" is no longer just a simple verbal blessing, but an active participation in the growth of rural revitalization.

The inheritance of the "baton".

"Seeing that what we are studying is useful for agriculture and really helpful to fishermen, we want to draw everyone's attention to agriculture, rural areas and farmers through a project like 'National Fisheries and Animal Husbandry'. Talking about the original intention of the "National Fishery and Animal Husbandry" project, Wu Xiao, who came out of rural Sichuan, was full of confidence.

In the winter of 2021, in order to investigate the serious epidemic of "new acute hemorrhagic syndrome" in the main breeding area of Treasure Fish in mainland China, Wu Xiao followed her instructor Ma Yue to Huludao area in Liaoning Province for on-site investigation and prevention and control guidance. They braved the unexpected blizzard, carried out research visits to a number of farms, and carried out systematic sample collection, which collected strong evidence to find out the cause, transmission route, course and spread risk of the disease. At the same time, the scene of the death of fishermen in batches deeply hurt Wu Xiao, after which he adjusted the direction of his doctoral dissertation to "pathogen identification and pathogenic mechanism research of new acute bleeding symptoms of turbot", and currently participated in the publication of 3 SCI papers and applied for 3 invention patents.

"Vaccination with fishery vaccines for immune prevention and control can solve the problem of aquaculture diseases, our products and breeding technology to meet the needs of farmers, reduce the amount of antibiotics, improve the survival rate of aquaculture, and provide new ideas for healthy aquaculture aquaculture. Wu Xiao said that "fish" and "fishing" are all awarded, and the "National Fishery and Animal Husbandry" project is committed to opening up the "last mile" of rural revitalization.

Wu Xiao's "product", which is well recognized by the industry, comes from the accumulation of Huali fishery vaccine team in the past 20 years. In view of the major diseases that seriously endanger the healthy breeding of marine fish in the mainland, on the way of tracking the international frontier of science and technology and exploring the core technology of green disease prevention of aquatic diseases, the team instructors Ma Yue, Wang Qiyao, Liu Xiaohong, Shao Shuai and other workers have devoted themselves to the creation of fishery vaccines, and have practiced the ability to curb major epidemics in marine aquaculture. "From biochemical cross-border to marine fishery vaccines, the mystery behind this is the integration of scientific research and industry. Ma Yue said.

"Integration of Taoism and Equipment, Serving Agriculture and Medicine", and the "National Fishery and Animal Husbandry" team uphold the original intention of scientific research and relay to pursue their dreams.

Writing a "thesis" in a field fish pond

Teachers and students of the team said that the answer lies in the laboratory, but also by the pond in the field.

Boya Zhang's research direction is the molecular mechanism of pathogenic bacteria. In the laboratory, she sees the occurrence and infection of diseases as the interaction between pathogenic bacteria and host cells, and the occurrence of diseases is only the onset and death of experimental specimens. When she went into the field to investigate the epidemic of fish diseases, she saw first-hand the lethality of infectious pathogens - thousands of fish in the breeding greenhouse can die overnight, and the economic losses caused by the farmers and the families behind them are enough to stumble.

"It wasn't until I saw this that I realized that the meaning of 'bubble' in the lab is not only to publish a thesis for graduation, but also to know what farmers need, so that our research has a direction to work towards. In many clinical investigations and field visits to infectious diseases, Zhang Boya said that the research team found new diseases that were different from the past, and new pathogens were indeed found after the isolated tissue samples were brought back to the laboratory, "which is a great help to our scientific research progress."

"Papers written in the field are more instructive for production. Team member Liu Yabo has just graduated with a Ph.D. and will go to work at the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. From the laboratory to the field, he said: "Only by looking at the fishery and understanding the size and needs of different fishermen can we make decisions when choosing the type of vaccine to be developed, taking more into account the economic cost and convenience." ”

In order to obtain first-hand data, team members sometimes spend months in the surrounding uninhabited breeding area, staring at the fish every day, taking samples at the production site, and then taking them back to the laboratory for research. Teacher Ma Yue said: "The fish pond in the field is the real place where papers are published, and moving scientific research to the production line can improve students' ability to find problems and solve practical problems, so that scientific research topics can be truly based on agriculture and rural areas." ”

The little lotus showed its sharp corners

It is not easy to gain the trust of fishermen or fishing companies when promoting vaccination applications.

Team members have been "closed-door" several times, such as "not believing at all", "difficulty in language communication", "poor practice environment conditions" and so on. "To show the fishermen, take the fishermen to do it, and speak with the effect. Mentor Wang Qiyao instructed the team members.

To this end, the team members moved the laboratory and technical training classes to the breeding area, and used the professional knowledge they learned to help fishermen raise more high-quality, fat, healthy and safe fish. While helping fishermen and fishing enterprises to set off a wave of "getting rich", the "little lotus" of the team also gained the first experience of scientific research and exposed their "sharp corners".

"In the process of 'zero distance' contact with farmers, I deeply felt how vaccine research and development can really be put into production, which is an experience that I can't experience at all on campus. Talking about the harvest of the project, Fu Yusun, a 2022 undergraduate student of the School of Bioengineering, who was selected for the school's "Top-notch Innovative Talent Training Program", said.

When promoting the application, due to the lack of knowledge reserve in the lower grades, Fu Yusun often felt that she had more than enough heart but not enough strength, and the fast and accurate way of the teachers and senior brothers and sisters when vaccinating turbot made her admire it very much. "This practical experience has allowed me to see my room for improvement", and Fu Yusun has also grown from "learning for no reason" and "lack of sense of meaning in learning" in his freshman year to now "understanding my major more deeply" and "being more active in learning".

Chu Shangchun, a team member and 2021 undergraduate, is also from the "Top-notch Innovative Talent Training Program". In the practice of the project, he deepened his systematic understanding of turbot farming, and felt the rigor necessary for the research and development of new drugs and the responsibility of scientific research workers, "thinking about what the country thinks, responding to the needs of farmers, and the scientific research spirit for the country and the people is the quality that scientific research workers must have."

Towards the "field", "fishing" see rural revitalization. In the future, the "National Fishery and Animal Husbandry" project team will continue to take root in the front line of scientific research and production, cultivate the love for agriculture, practice the ability to revitalize agriculture, find problems and needs in the practice of the service industry, and "solve people's livelihood and govern culture" in the service of rural revitalization. "We hope to help modernize agriculture and rural areas through advanced technology, so that fishermen can 'raise good fish' and Chinese people can 'eat good fish'. Wu Xiao said.
