Ye Shaobing is good at flowers, birds, insects and fish, advocates the use of form to write gods, and has in-depth research on the composition, interest, brushwork, and color of flowers and birds. Especially in the painting of roses and crape myrtles, his skills are particularly excellent, so he is known as the "Rose King".
Ye Shaobing (1896-1968), the name Shaobing, was a native of Panyu. He has loved painting since he was a child and studied under Gao Qifeng. His works have won gold medals in Chinese painting exhibitions held in many countries, and he has devoted his life to teaching, and has a wide influence in Guangdong and Hong Kong.
Ye Shaobing is good at combining the painted flowers, birds, insects and fish with the rendering of the background, so that the reality of life and personal emotions are naturally blended, reaching the realm of "love with the scene, and the scene with love", making the atmosphere of the picture real and touching. Chen Shuren highly admired his method.
A work called "Rain Lotus" won Ye Shaobing a gold medal at the Belgian World Exposition. In the picture, the lotus leaves and lotus flowers are swaying but not falling in the wind and rain, reflecting the lotus flowers out of the sludge and unstained, standing in the wind and rain undefeated.
Ye Shaobing once lived on Xie Di Street in Shiqiao Town, Panyu County, which was a famous passage of Shiqiao and gave birth to four calligraphers, one of whom was Xie Xi. Xie Xi and Ye Shaobing often studied calligraphy and painting together in the "Zhiyuan", and later Xie Xi opened a painting gallery in Guangzhou, and soon Ye Shaobing also moved to live in Shiqiao Santang. Eventually, he moved to live in the lower street of the waterside of the city bridge.
In the 60s of the last century, due to the low income of Shiqiao citizens and the sluggish sales of calligraphy and paintings, Ye Shaobing decided to leave Shiqiao and go to Guangzhou for development. During this period, he and his fellow disciples He Qiyuan and Huang Shaoqiang opened the Sui Han Painting Society in Hong Kong and devoted themselves to the painting career.
From the end of 1961 to the Spring Festival, the county cultural center held a calligraphy and painting exhibition in the Cultural Palace, and Ye Shaobing presented a "Harvest Map". A total of 41 kinds of Panyu vegetables and crops are depicted in this map, including sugarcane, corn, rice and other things that Panyu citizens usually eat. This painting is depicted in a part-time and freehand manner, and the texture of various vegetables and fruits is vivid, and the texture is very wonderful and realistic.
Now this painting is collected in the Memorial Hall of the Lingnan School of Painting in Guangzhou, as an auspicious celebration of the abundant vegetables and fruits in Panyu, highlighting Ye Shaobing's in-depth understanding and love for Panyu agriculture.
Ye Shaobing's artistic achievements and exquisite skills in flower and bird painting have made him an outstanding painter and artist of a generation. His work is beloved by people, and his story and spirit continue to inspire those who come after him.
