The Xinhua Community Cultural Activity Center recently held the first phase of the 2024 intangible cultural heritage into the campus series of activities, entering the classrooms of Fasan Primary School and Fudan Primary School, the inheritance base of "Fahua peony grafting skills", integrating peony elements with the two intangible cultural heritage skills of dough sculpture and buckle, so that children can appreciate the beauty of intangible cultural heritage.

"Fahua peony began in the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty. The craftsmen skillfully grafted the peony of Luoyang and the peony of Yangzhou, and finally cultivated a potted peony boutique that can adapt to the humid climate of the south of the Yangtze River, and named the peony of the flower because it grows in the area of the Fahua Temple......" In the class, the teacher first introduced the history and development status of the peony to the students, so that the students could understand the city memory of the peony and Changning.

Subsequently, the teacher integrated the peony elements with the two intangible cultural heritage skills of dough sculpture and buckle, and led the children to reshape the beauty of the shape of the Fahua peony, appreciate the beauty of the color of the Fahua peony, and taste the overall quality and aesthetic value of the intangible cultural heritage art. "When I mentioned peonies before, the first thing that came to mind was Luoyang peony, and today I learned that there is a long history of Fahua peony near our home, and I will tell my parents when I go back!" many students said.

The reporter learned that since the Southern Song Dynasty, with the careful cultivation of several generations and the continuous maturity of grafting technology, Fahua peony has become a native plant of the local area, and fully adapted to the water and soil environment of the Jiangnan region.

In 2009, the "Fahua Peony Grafting Technique" was included in the second batch of representative items of Shanghai's intangible cultural heritage, and the protection unit was the Xinhua Community Cultural Activity Center in Changning District, Shanghai.

In recent years, the "Fahua peony grafting technique" has been continuously innovated and developed in the inheritance, condensing the ingenuity and wisdom of horticulturists from generation to generation. In 2022, Xinhua Road Sub-district set up a peony planting interest group to further expand the social dissemination of this intangible cultural heritage, and at the same time, the Xinhua Road Sub-district Community Cultural Activity Center also actively carried out the dissemination of intangible cultural heritage, sending intangible cultural heritage to the campus in the form of rich and colorful activities, with the theme of Fahua peony, from the popularization of its historical origin to the interpretation of grafting skills, to the on-site viewing of Zhongshan Park and the cultural and creative handmaking of intangible cultural heritage derivatives, so that students have a deeper understanding of intangible cultural heritage. Next, the Xinhua Road Street Community Cultural Activity Center will continue to promote intangible cultural heritage skills into communities, campuses, and business districts, so that more citizens can experience the unique charm of Fahua peony.
