April in the world is a good reading
It is a great pleasure to participate in the "World Book Day Opening Ceremony and Reading Star Award Ceremony" held by the school library. Thank you, Director Liu Baoqing, for your sincere invitation. It is also a great honor to be the "Scholarly Ambassador" of ECNU Library. Here, I sincerely congratulate the students who have won the honor of Reading Star, and I also wish Guizishan the fragrance of books forever and the cultural context will be passed on for a long time.
At this moment, I think of a couplet written by Mr. Zhang Yuanji, a famous modern publisher, philologist and librarian: the centuries-old home is nothing more than accumulating virtue, and the first good thing is to read. Some say that this couplet was written by Weng Tongyi, and some say that it was written by Chu Tunan. In the courtyard of Zhang Yuanji's library in Mr. Zhang Yuanji's hometown of Haiyan, Zhejiang, a large stone is engraved with this couplet of Zhang Ju's old handwriting.

From Mr. Zhang Yuanji, I can't help but think of the late Mr. Zhang Shunhui, a famous scholar of our university. Mr. Zhang Shunhui also highly admired Mr. Zhang Yuanji, and there are only two modern philologists introduced in the special chapter of his "Historical Philology", one of which is Zhang Yuanji. By the way, including historical philology, there are three disciplines that have made pioneering contributions in the country (the other two are scientific socialism and contemporary Chinese literature). Mr. Shun Hui himself is a seed of reading and the soul of Guizishan Humanities. Cao Juren said that after the 50s, only Qian Mu, Liu Yizheng, Zhang Shunhui and others can be called masters of Chinese studies, and Shunhui's old classics and historiography are still above Qian Mu. The rating is quite high.
As the so-called plum blossom fragrance comes from the bitter cold, the sword edge is sharpened by itself. Mr. Shunhui, who has never attended school and has no academic qualifications, has become a generation of academic masters by self-study, diligence and joyful learning. In his "Diary of Zhuang Yixuan", there are records of his reading and writing when he fled with his family during the Anti-Japanese War years, including "After several months of migration, he did not forget to read and write when he was frightened" (1943). This is the period when Zhang Lao was a national teacher in Lantian, Hunan.

In 1946, at the age of 35, Zhang Shunhui went to Lanzhou University to become a professor. He himself recalled: It happened that in the winter of that year, Landa bought back a large number of books and materials from Shanghai, including the Ming engraved "Huangming Jingshiwen Compilation", a very rare banned book of the Qing Dynasty. "When I took advantage of the summer vacation, I mustered up the courage to bring pen and paper and read it in the library. From dawn to dusk, ten volumes are exhausted. After fifty days at the desk, I dabbled in it. It is divided into 12 sections, each of which is classified into departments, not confused, and written as a paper published in the Lan University Newspaper. This is still a well-known story in Lanzhou University today. Mr. Zhang said that when reading, we must dare to fight a tough battle, and we must not only have "courage" but also "stupidity" when reading. When he was 19 years old, he read the Zizhi Tongjian, and he finished it in July. Later, I spent ten years of hard work, carefully read and circled the "Twenty-four History", and worked hard and gained a lot. This is kind of a statement.
As for the "Cultural Revolution" period, everyone must know a little about the story of Mr. Zhang reading all day and night. At that time, he lived in a simple dormitory converted from a bathhouse in Tan Hualin, which was like a steamer in summer and an ice cellar in winter, and it leaked everywhere when it rained. It was here that he insisted on reading and writing, and completed more than 2 million words of "Commentary on the Words of Shuowen", and wrote more than 50 brushes just by copying. Mr. Zhang Kaiyuan talked about this incident many times when he was alive, and wrote: "The many young teachers who surrounded the battle and watched the battle in the No. 3 teaching building on Guizi Mountain, and Mr. Zhang Shunhui, who was writing at the desk in the morning in the Tanhualin bathhouse, these two scenes are fixed in my 'Cultural Revolution' memory chain and enlighten me. When I am old, I always like to warn young people: even if the society is sick, do not follow the trend, and when you are at the lowest point in life, you might as well enrich yourself. Of course, Mr. Shun Hui is not a person who reads books and books to death, and he has repeatedly stressed that it is necessary to read both books with and without words, to read life, and to read society.
Mr. Zhang Shunhui
This is the reader and teacher on Guizi Mountain who is determined and idealistic. I remember two years ago, I told President Peng Shuangjie (he was the vice principal in charge of the Youth League Committee at the time) that ECNU could not do without Yun Daiying, but ECNU could not only have Yun Daiying. In the revolutionary period, we need the revolutionary spirit and revolutionary talents; in the construction period, we must not forget our original aspiration and keep our mission firmly in mind, and we need more the attitude of construction, the talents to be built, and the academic culture to be inherited and built. He was in favor. Qian Jibo, Zhang Shunhui, Yang Dongchun, Zhan Jianfeng, Wei Zhuomin, Zhang Kaiyuan, Xing Fuyi, these great gentlemen who represent the humanistic tradition and academic spirit of Guizishan, how they study, how they study, how they make meritorious contributions, all give us many useful inspirations today.
The eyes are full of fragrant flowers, the mountains are full of books, and the April day in the world is the time to read!
