In the summer of the twenty-third year of Guangxu (1897), the Minjiang River in Fuzhou was rippling, the breeze was slow, and a small boat was swaying on the Jiangzhu. I saw two people sitting on the boat, one holding the French writer Alexandre Dumas's "La Traviata" in his hand, dictating the contents of the book in Chinese, and the other translating it into smooth Chinese. Later, the translation of "The Remains of the Lady of the Camellias in Paris" was published and became popular in China.

The narrator was Wang Shouchang, a French teacher at the Harbour Master School at that time, and the record was our protagonist - Lin Shu, the "King of Translation".

Lin Shu (1852-1924), known as Qinnan and Weilu, was a strange person in modern China. He is good at poetry, calligraphy and painting, and is especially famous for his ancient literature. He was born and did not know foreign languages, but he relied on the oral accounts of others and translated more than 170 kinds of foreign novels in Chinese, among which "The Remains of the Lady of the Camellias in Paris" and "The Black Slave Calling for Heaven" had the greatest influence. The Commercial Press has launched the "Lin Yi Novel Series", and "Lin Yi Novel" has become a special term in the history of translation.

Lin Shu's former residence

In 1852, Lin Shu was born in a salt merchant family in Guanglufang, Fuzhou. The Zheng family knows the book and knows the righteousness, and loves Lin Shu very much. One summer, Kobayashi Shu wanted to eat lychees, so Zheng pawned his clothes in exchange for money to buy some lychees for him to eat.

At this time, Zheng took this opportunity to educate Lin Shudao: "Children do not suffer from food, but have no ambitions", encouraging him to be an ambitious person since he was a child. After listening to this, Kobayashi was deeply moved.

At the end of the 19th century, China was suffering from internal and external troubles. Many intellectuals are exploring China's hopes. Lin Shu compared himself to a "chicken called Dan", consciously regarded the translation work as a cause to open up the people's wisdom and save the country, and encouraged the people to rise up to resist foreign aggression and defend the country in the preface of the translation. Almost all Chinese in the late Qing Dynasty knew that there were novels in foreign countries because of Lin Yi, and a large number of writers such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun, and Guo Moruo were nourished by Lin Yi's novels when they were teenagers.

Lin Shu manuscript

In the same year that he translated La Traviata, Lin Shu saw the many shortcomings of the old education system in China, and felt the urgency of implementing educational reform. Cangxia Jingshe evolved into the later Fujian Institute of Technology, and now the Fujian University of Technology.

Translated by Lin Shu

Lin Shu's idea of "advocating new learning and learning from the West" to save the country and rejuvenate education played an enlightening role in promoting the reform of the national education system at that time. In addition to teaching, Lin Shu uses most of the remuneration he earns from translations to support students from poor families, hoping that they will study hard and serve the motherland.

Lin Shu's family letter

Needless to say, in the face of the changing times, Lin Shu has a conservative side. But from the existing Lin Shu's family books, you can feel that the "stubborn" Lin Shu is also an elder who is good at teaching his children and is strict and benevolent.

He taught his eldest son, Lin Qi, who was the county magistrate, to be sensitive to the people's feelings, to be cautious everywhere, to manage his family well, and not to be tainted with the habits of officials and dependents; he taught his son-in-law Zheng Lichen to do things in a down-to-earth manner, to be calm, to cherish his reputation, and not to follow the crowd. A good family style is a valuable legacy that Lin Shu has left to future generations.
