However, Xiamen University is a distant place for tourists, and it is also the hometown of countless Xiamen University students. Xiamen University is a university that loves the sea, and several school doors are open to the sea. Outside the gate of Baicheng School is the Baicheng Beach on Huandao Road, and the distance from the sea is almost within reach. In the morning, go to the beach to ride the waves and watch the tide, and at night, sit and watch the stars and the moon on the sea. The stars are changing, day and night are changing, the waves of Baichenghai rise and fall, and the students of Xiamen University rise towards the rising sun and sleep with the waves.
As a "mountain and sea school", there is no shortage of sea-view classrooms and sea-view dormitories built on high places on campus. The sea that can be seen from the Shijing and Lingyun dormitory buildings is the vast sky that can only be seen after counting thousands of steps and climbing to the top of the mountain.

The Qunxian Building, built at the beginning of the school (1921-1922), is a typical "Jiageng style building". The style of the five buildings covered by Nangying, Jimei, Qunxian, Tong'an, and Yingxue is likened to "wearing a suit and a hat" - the walls are made of granite masonry, which is probably "suit fabric", and the roof is "Sanchuan Ridge and Rest Mountain", and the tail of the ridge is in the dovetail style, showing Chinese aesthetics.

The buildings are lined up in a row, which is a typical layout of one main and four slaves. The main building is the Qunxian Building, taken from the "Orchid Pavilion Collection Preface" in the "Qunxian Bizhi, Shaochang Xianji", its architectural style is mostly derived from the southern Fujian dwellings; the names of Tong'an and Jimei are taken from Mr. Chen's hometown, mainly in Chinese style; the architectural style of the second floor of Nangying and Yingxue tends to be Western-style, "Che Yin takes the bag to hold fireflies and diligently study; Sun Kang Yingxue is the lamp, and he never quits studying", and the name of the building embodies Chen Jiageng's encouragement and expectation for the students of Xiamen University.
Located on the shore of Furong Lake, the Furong Mansion Group, built in the fifties and sixties of the 20th century, is also a combination of Chinese and Western, with a Chinese-style roof and Western-style verandah architectural style, which is full of vicissitudes of time. As an ancient building, Furong 1 to 4 are still student dormitories, and a dormitory in Furong 1 is a dormitory that has three academicians who have walked out of the same class.

Nearly 100 years of "Southern Power"
Xiamen University is not only the Xiamen University of Xiamen people, but also the epitome of Xiamen's urban development.
In 1921, Tan Kah Kee founded Xiamen University, personally selected the site of the university, and set up five colleges and 17 departments, including arts, science, law, business, and education. After running all over Xiamen Island, Chen Jiageng chose the site of Yanwu Pavilion, the place where Zheng Chenggong trained the army, as the venue for Xiamen University. In 1954, in front of the Qunxian Building, a side of "training courage" regular script stone carving was unearthed, according to research, it was the stone component of the martial arts pavilion, and the word "training courage" was a gist of Zheng Chenggong's training of soldiers. Its patriotic ambition to rejuvenate the country can be said to be in the same line.

For a long time, the geographical location of Xiamen University was a little remote, and when you arrived at the campus, you had to take a small sampan from the current Narcissus Road. At the time, people wondered why Tan Kah Kee chose this location, but a few decades later, Xiamen Island was known as the "Garden on the Sea", and Xiamen University became the most beautiful university in China, like the most beautiful scenery in the garden.
"Great view and never in arrears"
Since the establishment of Xiamen University, the university has always been extremely generous to its faculty and staff.
During the turbulent period of the twenties and thirties of the last century, many schools often failed to pay salaries, but Xiamen University has always been well-funded due to the support of Chen Kah Kee, and the monthly salary of professors can reach up to 400 yuan, which is equivalent to a small villa at that time. And the school never owes salaries, Tan Kah Kee said, "I'd rather drink porridge than owe money to the staff." ”
This was also confirmed by Lu Xun, who once taught here, who once commented on Xiamen University: "The scenery is excellent, and there is never a salary arrears".

From September 1926 to January 1927, Mr. Lu Xun served as a professor in the Department of Chinese Literature and Literature and a professor at the Institute of Chinese Studies of Xiamen University, where he taught courses on the history of Chinese literature and the history of Chinese novels. Every time Lu Xun went to class, as soon as the bell rang, the classroom was already full, and the students who arrived later could only stand by the window and lean against the wall to listen to the lecture. The students were not satisfied with just listening to Lu Xun's lectures, but often went to the dormitory to ask him all kinds of questions.
During his four months at Xiamen University, Mr. Lu Xun produced a lot of articles, totaling more than 170,000 words, and the primary school textbooks included "From Baicao Garden to Sanwei Study" and "Mr. Fujino" were both written when he was teaching at Xiamen University. He <坟>mentions Nanputuo Temple in his article "Written in the Back":
"Tonight the surroundings are so silent, the shimmer of wild burning rises at the foot of the mountain behind the house, and the Nanputuo Temple is still doing a puppet show, and the sound of gongs and drums is heard from time to time, and it is even more silent in every interval. ”

"I'd rather Xiamen University than a building"
The emergence of National Xiamen University was after 1937.
After 1929, under the double attack of the capitalist economic crisis and the dumping of Japanese imperialism, Tan Kah Kee's enterprise suffered heavy losses and was on the verge of bankruptcy year after year, and it was also difficult to raise funds for the running of Xiamen University and Jimei University. Relatives and friends around him persuaded him to stop funding the university to protect his business, but Tan Kah Kee categorically refused-
"Enterprises can be closed, but schools must not be closed!"
"I'd rather sell the building than support Xiamen University!"

In such a difficult period, he used various methods to raise funds for running the school, and struggled for several years, until after selling the rubber plantation, the share capital of Tan Kah Kee Company and the three buildings in Singapore, he finally could not support it, and in the spring of 1937, he unconditionally donated Xiamen University to the then Nationalist Government and changed it to a private state. From 1921 to 1937, Tan Kah Kee devoted everything he had, ruined his family and built his education, and maintained Xiamen University alone for 16 years.

"The most perfect university east of Kolkata"
In September 1937, the Japanese army attacked Xiamen. Because Xiamen University is located at the forefront of national defense and is approaching the fort, the shells directly hit the campus of Xiamen University, scattering roof tiles and destroying buildings. In order to protect the teachers and students of the university, Xiamen University was forced to move to Gulangyu Island, and due to the increasing war, it moved to Changting, a mountain city in western Fujian, in December.

Except for a three-week suspension during the relocation period, the rest of the time, the sound of Xiamen University people has not tasted or dropped. After the relocation, other universities moved further west, and Xiamen University became the only remaining fruit in the southeast half, providing opportunities for many "out-of-school youth" in the southeast to study, and was known as "the best university in the southeast during the Anti-Japanese War".
At that time, Changting was located in a remote area, there was no electricity, and the dormitory only had the faint light of green oil lamps. Sa Bendong, who was the president of Xiamen University at the time, was an expert in electrical engineering, so he led several science and engineering teaching assistants and instrument managers to disassemble the special car assigned to him by the school, convert the engine into a lighting generator, and install electrical circuits and electric lights, so that the whole school could shine brightly.

At that time, Xiamen University was considered to be one of the most complete universities in China, and some experts and scholars from Britain and the United States visited Changting and were greatly moved after visiting and inspecting it, believing that it was a great miracle in wartime, and the American geological and geographical expert Ge Deshi called Xiamen University "the most perfect university east of Calcutta."
The intersection of phoenix blossoms
Xiamen University's spoiling of students is multifaceted, so much so that after more than half a year of "forced vacation", students return to campus and have a feeling of going to the island for a vacation.

On weekdays, Xiamen University people live in a sea-view dormitory, eat free rice, and the courses are all-encompassing, and the Xiang'an Campus of Xiamen University, known as the "Xiang'an Royal Institute of Technology", directly moved the cinema into the Dewang Library, and some of the freshmen of physics also received a "diamond ring" made of moissanite during the Chinese Valentine's Day...... But the most important thing is the care of the professor for the students.

Historically, there have been many famous teachers in Xiamen University, such as Mr. Lin Yutang, a linguist, Mr. Lu Xun, a literary giant, Mr. Gu Jiegang, a master of history, and Mr. Lin Huixiang, an anthropologist. Mr. Yu Guangzhong, an alumnus and writer of Xiamen University, calls himself a "Xiamen man who travels from the south to the north" and has great nostalgia for Xiamen University, and the annual drama "Goldbach's Conjecture" is a tribute to the mathematician Chen Jingrun.

Today, with the "Jiageng" marine science comprehensive research ship built by Xiamen University and with full intellectual property rights, Xiamen University has become the first university in Chinese mainland to have a world-class scientific research ship; in the desert uninhabited area of the northwest of the mainland, Xiamen University's "Jiageng-1" rocket has been successfully launched. The "Jiageng" scientific research ship rode the wind and waves, and the "Jiageng-1" rocket soared straight into the sky, "it can go up to the moon for nine days, and it can go down to the five seas to catch turtles" is not a lie.

Xiamen University has even released an "overseas version" - Xiamen University Malaysia, which is the first overseas branch campus with an independent campus wholly owned by a famous Chinese university, and the first branch campus of a Chinese university in Malaysia.
