What is an occupational disease?
Some treasures say that such as cervical and lumbar spondylosis, hair loss, thyroid nodules, hemorrhoids, constipation, etc., are all "occupational diseases" of old workers.
But to be honest, none of the diseases mentioned above are actually statutory occupational diseases. So, what exactly is an occupational disease?
The occupational diseases referred to in the Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Occupational Diseases refer to diseases caused by exposure to dust, radioactive substances and other toxic and harmful factors in the occupational activities of workers of enterprises, public institutions and individual economic organizations.
What are the notifiable occupational diseases?
At present, the Classification and Catalogue of Occupational Diseases in mainland China lists 132 occupational diseases in 10 categories.
How is an occupational disease determined?
So, how can we tell if we have an occupational disease?
The following four conditions must be met at the same time and all of them are indispensable.
1. There must be a labor relationship, and the sick person should be a worker in an enterprise, public institution or individual economic organization;
2. Must have arisen in the course of engaging in professional activity;
3. It must be caused by exposure to occupational disease hazards such as dust, radioactive substances and other toxic and harmful substances;
4. It must be an occupational disease listed in the classification and catalogue of occupational diseases published by the state.
What are the hazards of occupational diseases?
Occupational disease hazards refer to various hazards that may cause occupational diseases to workers engaged in occupational activities.
Occupational disease hazard factors include: various harmful chemical, physical and biological factors existing in occupational activities and other occupational harmful factors generated in the course of operation.
According to the provisions of the Classification Catalogue of Occupational Disease Hazard Factors (Guowei CDC [2015] No. 92), there are 459 kinds of 6 categories, including 52 kinds of dust, 375 kinds of chemical factors, 15 kinds of physical factors, 8 kinds of radioactive factors, 6 kinds of biological factors, and 3 kinds of other factors.

- Sign a labor contract to understand the occupational hazards of your position
When an employer concludes a labor contract with an employee, it shall truthfully inform the employee of the occupational disease hazards and consequences that may occur in the course of work, as well as the protective measures and treatment for occupational diseases, and specify this in the labor contract. Workers can take the initiative to check the labor contract to find out whether there are occupational disease hazards in their positions.
- Conduct an occupational health examination before taking up the job
Newly recruited employees should participate in the pre-employment occupational health examination organized by the employer in a timely manner, and review the relevant occupational abnormalities in a timely manner according to the requirements of the physical examination institution.
- Participate in occupational health training
Actively participate in the training on occupational disease prevention and control carried out by employers, and can also obtain occupational disease prevention and control knowledge through the media and the Internet, so as to improve their awareness of occupational disease prevention.
- Take personal protection
Consciously abide by the employer's occupational health post operating procedures or other safety regulations.
Adhere to the correct use of occupational disease personal protective equipment during work, such as dust-proof masks, noise-proof earplugs, etc.
