Gateball, also known as croquet, is an outdoor ball game in which a mallet is used to hit the ball through an iron gate on flat ground or on the lawn. Gateball originated in France and was introduced to China in the 30s of the 20th century, when it was only used as a game course at Yenching University. Since 1970, it has been promoted as an activity program for the elderly. Gateball occupies a small area, the technique is simple and diverse, the game time is short, and the amount of exercise is not large, which is suitable for a safe physical exercise for middle-aged and elderly people.

The Nanchuan District Goalball Team has been awarded the "Chongqing Sports and Fitness Demonstration Team for the Elderly" by the Chongqing Sports Association for the Elderly, and has won the first place in the 14th Gateball Invitational Tournament in the Southeast Area of Chongqing in 2023, and the third prize in the 33rd Goalball Competition for the Elderly in the Yangtze River Coastal Cities + (Economic Belt) in 2023.

The gateball match held in Nanchuan is one of the sub-events of the 5th Chongqing Sports and Fitness Games for the Elderly, and 14 sports will be held in other districts and counties, such as fishing, bocce ball, gateball, air volleyball, tai chi, table tennis, chess and cards, tennis, fitness ball exercises, and fitness qigong. The Games will run until December. Nanchuan will compete in 13 events in addition to tennis.
