Sun Yuanliang's corps was ambushed when it broke through

The remnants fled back and were almost annexed by the 5th Army
But after all, it was a breakthrough at night, and the incident was in a hurry, so the 16th Corps was not completely annihilated, and many of the routed soldiers turned around and fled back into the encirclement. Xiong Shunyi, deputy chief of staff of the Corps, also escaped by luck, collected the rout along the way, quickly collected more than 2,700 people, and contained the artillery battalion of the 41st Army. This force was immediately coveted by the armies of the Central Army in the encirclement, and Xiong Xiaosan, the commander of the 5th Army, directly approached the old commander Du Yuming and the corps commander Qiu Qingquan, and asked that this rout be used to supplement the shortage of his army.

Du finally ordered the 7,000 remnants to be reorganized into the 122nd Division, with Xiong as the division commander, and several regiment commanders who did not break through to be promoted to deputy division commanders, with 3 infantry regiments, 1 cavalry regiment and 1 officer training team. After the unit was organized, it was subordinate to the 72nd Army of the 2nd Corps, and was stationed between Zhu Lou and Zhu Xiaozhuang to confront the East China Field Army. Although they have a home, after all, they are formed by a rout, and their morale is low, especially at night.
After suffering until the afternoon of January 9, Xiong Shunyi finally received an order from the military headquarters of the 72nd Army, and the situation was critical, and the army decided to surrender; Xiong immediately notified all regiments to stop resisting and all laid down their arms. At this point, the last remnants of the 16th Corps were also wiped out.
