Recently, New H3C Group, a subsidiary of Tsinghua Unigroup, issued the "Carbon Footprint Statement" of 9 servers, which analyzes the main factors affecting the carbon footprint of products by quantifying and evaluating the carbon footprint of products throughout the life cycle, and then explores effective emission reduction paths to lead the industry in efficient, high-quality and sustainable development.

Under the guidance of the "dual carbon" goal, digital infrastructure has become one of the key positions for carbon reduction and emission reduction, and continuing to deepen the upgrading of green computing power is a key link to promote the high-quality development of the digital economy. The "Carbon Footprint Statement" issued this time covers 9 servers such as H3C UniServer R4900 G6 Ultra, based on the scientific framework and overall requirements of life cycle assessment methods of ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and ISO 14067. Greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the life cycle to end-of-life are recorded and analysed in detail to identify the main sources of environmental impact and potential for improvement, with the main environmental impact indicator being the global warming trend (GWP) in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO2 eq.). The release of this series of "Carbon Footprint Statements" is another important measure for New H3C Group to actively fulfill its "dual carbon" social responsibility, which will effectively promote the improvement of its own technical level and market competitiveness, and lead the upstream and downstream of the industry to jointly move towards a new journey of innovation and upgrading.

Taking the "Carbon Footprint Statement" of H3C UniServer R4900 G6 Ultra as an example, the LCA assessment result of the life cycle of one R4900 G6 Ultra is 9370.06 kg CO2 eq., of which the GWP of global warming potential in the raw material collection, manufacturing, transportation, use and waste recycling stages accounts for 7.91%, 0.16%, 0.38%, 92.28% and -0.73% respectively.

  • Raw material collection stage (7.91%): The carbon emissions in this stage are relatively low, of which CPUs, server hosts, and hard disks account for a relatively large proportion.

Carbon reduction approach: Reduce the carbon footprint of products by using energy-efficient hardware components such as low-power CPUs and high-performance storage devices.

  • Manufacturing stage (0.16%): The carbon emissions generated in this stage only account for 0.16% of the total, and mainly come from the electricity consumption in the production process, accounting for about 94.35% of the production and manufacturing stage.

Carbon reduction method: The use of cold plate liquid cooling template for heat dissipation can significantly reduce product energy consumption and carbon emissions compared with the traditional air cooling system.

  • Waste recovery stage (-0.73%): The reuse of recyclable materials can reduce 68.12kg CO2 eq, and the total impact can be reduced by 0.73%.

Carbon reduction pathways: Increase the recycling of materials, especially PCB and steel, and try to choose low-carbon raw materials to reduce carbon emissions in the waste recycling stage.
