350,000 times in the night,

Negative flash is the strongest - 234kA.

When a rainstorm, thunderstorm and gale warning is in effect,

One of the most common reminders we see is

"Stay in a safe room and take shelter".

Avoid going out during thunderstorms,

In addition to preventing electric injuries and electric shocks

and other meteorological and geological disasters,

Did you know that

Can thunderstorms actually induce illness?

Especially in the recent past

Cough, wheezing, chest tightness, throat discomfort and other symptoms,

or people with allergies,

Be wary of this seasonal occurrence -

Thunderstorm asthma

In April, a hospital appeared

Patients with "thunderstorm asthma" gather to see a doctor

On the evening of April 1, the central city of Chongqing ushered in a thunderstorm. From 0:00 to 1:00 a.m. on the 2nd, nearly 30 thunderstorm asthma patients came to the emergency department of the Jiangnan Branch of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, with symptoms of severe cough, shortness of breath, obvious wheezing, and combined with allergic rhinitis and a recent history of upper respiratory tract infection.

"When I first arrived at the hospital, I was holding my breath so badly that I felt like I was dying, but I didn't expect it to be caused by a thunderstorm. A 34-year-old male patient lamented that just two hours earlier, he had been comfortably lying in bed looking at his phone, but soon had difficulty breathing, and subsequently sought emergency medical attention.

From 0:00 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. on the same day, the emergency department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University received more than 120 patients with asthma during thunderstorms.

According to previous reports, in early September last year, after a thunderstorm, many citizens in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, suddenly had uncomfortable throat, violent cough, chest tightness, shortness of breath and even difficulty breathing, and the number of asthma patients in the outpatient and emergency departments of major hospitals suddenly increased significantly, and some hospitals received 800 people a day. During the same period, Beijing also received a number of cases of thunderstorm asthma.

To date, one of the most widespread thunderstorm asthma occurred in Melbourne, Australia, in 2016, when more than 3,000 patients were treated in emergency departments for respiratory symptoms, including nearly 500 asthma patients who required hospitalization, leading to a state of emergency in the local healthcare system.

Why do thunderstorms trigger asthma?

There are many factors that trigger asthma, such as inhalation of allergens, low air pressure, high air humidity, mood swings, etc. And these factors are easy to achieve in a thunderstorm.

Many people think that after thunderstorms, the air will be fresher and cleaner, and the airborne allergens that stay in the air will also be drastically reduced, such as pollen, fungi, dust mites, etc.

However, the opposite is true, the air after a thunderstorm is not so "clean", and thunderstorms can indeed cause asthma exacerbations.

Scientists have found that

There are usually three factors that contribute to the development of asthma in thunderstorms:

First, there is a thunderstorm;

second, the pollen concentration in the environment is high;

The third is allergies.

Almost all thunderstorms with asthma occur during the peak season of pollen dispersal. The vast majority of reported thunderstorm patients are allergic to pollen, mainly pasture pollen, but also tree pollen, and a small number of patients are allergic to fungi.

Qin He, deputy chief physician of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, affiliated to Tsinghua University, introduced:

The cold air currents before a thunderstorm can carry pollen particles into the clouds, where moisture and lightning can burst the pollen grains, releasing smaller particles.

When these tiny particles are inhaled into the nasal cavity, they are more likely to break out of the filtering barrier of the nasal mucosa and enter the lower respiratory tract, irritating the bronchial tubes and triggering symptoms such as coughing and even wheezing.

Doctors pointed out that thunderstorm asthma is an acute attack that can occur in people of any age, and is more common in people with allergies, especially those who are allergic to pollen and mold.

In general, although thunderstorm asthma is a relatively rare phenomenon and does not occur every time there is a thunderstorm, people with allergies should still take precautions and pay attention.

Thunderstorms in extreme weather

How to deal with people with allergies?

1

Limit going out during thunderstorms

People with allergies should pay attention to pollen concentration monitoring and forecasting and thunderstorm warning during the pollen season. During thunderstorms and when pollen concentrations are high, minimize outdoor activities and close doors and windows in advance to prevent pollen from drifting in.

During periods of high pollen concentrations, if it feels hot indoors, take extra care when using the air conditioner, as the air conditioner will absorb pollen powder from the air and blow it into the room again. Air purifiers and water purifiers can be used if possible.

2

Don't rush out after a thunderstorm

Don't rush out after the thunderstorm stops, it's best to stay indoors for a while, as the evaporation of rainwater can carry a lot of powder into the air. Reasonably grasp the time to go out and ventilate, and if you must go out, try to wear masks, goggles and hats.

3

Clean up when you get back from the outdoors

Other exposed areas, such as the nose and face, can be washed with saline or water. Change clothes that have been stained with pollen, and avoid drying clothes and bedding outdoors.

4

Take medication under the guidance of a doctor

Allergy-prone, especially in patients with well-known hay fever:

Prepare your medication in advance, and prepare an emergency inhaled bronchodilator for summer and autumn pollen rhinitis patients who have never had an asthma attack. Prophylactic anti-allergy treatment can also be taken 10-14 days before pollen season under the guidance of a doctor to reduce the risk of thunderstorm asthma.

Patients with first-time symptoms of thunderstorm asthma:

Symptomatic treatment followed by allergen testing. If a hay fever allergy is confirmed, your doctor will treat your symptoms accordingly.

Patients with confirmed asthma:

Carry fast-acting bronchodilators with you in case you need them. If you have symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, etc., and cannot be relieved after resting or taking medicine, you should seek medical attention in time.

What pollen triggers allergies?

On the mainland, there are more cases of asthma from thunderstorms in spring and autumn.

In spring, pollen concentrations are high in the south, and when there are thunderstorms, there is an increase in the number of asthma patients with thunderstorms.

In autumn, the concentration of pollen such as artemisia grass, humulus and small ragweed is higher in the northern region, and there are more thunderstorms, so the number of thunderstorm asthma patients also increases accordingly.

Spring is the season when flowers bloom in the southern region.

What exactly flowers cause pollen allergies?

Expert introduction,

Pollen is divided into two categories: "insect-borne flowers" and "wind-borne flowers":

Insect pollen:

Such as peach blossoms, apricot blossoms, rape flowers, tulips, etc., the more colorful, high-value, and can attract bees and butterflies, the less likely to cause allergies. Because the pollen of this type of flower is usually transmitted by insects, the particles are large, heavy and sticky, and it is difficult to float in the air.

Wind pollen:

This kind of flower is generally small but not bright, the flower has degenerated or non-existent, and there is no aroma and nectar glands, but its pollen is so small that it is invisible to the naked eye, light and abundant, so that it can be sent by the wind to distant places, and these pollen will float in the air in large quantities, and it will fall on the skin without knowing it, which is easy to cause allergic symptoms.

The "main culprits of allergies" often come from "wind-borne flowers" such as inconspicuous trees, grasses, and small wildflowers on the roadside. Therefore, it is not only possible to induce allergies when you go to the wild to enjoy the flowers, but also to "get hit" in daily travel.

Daily pollen concentration in Guangzhou

Check it here

Guangzhou Daily Xinhuacheng reporter learned from the Guangzhou Forestry and Garden Bureau and the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment that since April, the official website of the municipal government and relevant departments has set up a floating window of "ecological Guangzhou data", which can query the daily air negative (oxygen) ion concentration, daily pollen concentration, the city's air quality status and the Guangzhou flower appreciation map.

Citizens who are allergic to pollen can click on the "Pollen Index" in the floating window to check the pollen concentration and corresponding grade in Guangzhou.

The pollen index refers to the number of pollen particles per unit volume in the air, and the size of the index directly reflects the amount of pollen in the air. Higher pollen levels mean higher concentrations of pollen in the air and greater pollen indexes.
