After graduating from university in 2015, I returned to Chongzhou and became a professional agricultural manager. Indeed, at the beginning, I really didn't know how to farm, and I didn't want to farm, and as for why my daughter inherited her father's business and became a "new farmer," I had to start with my father.
In 2010, when I was in high school, the state came up with a new agricultural policy, which was to set up land cooperatives and encourage farmers to take "land contract management rights" as shares. After farmers become shareholders, in addition to labor income, they can also pay dividends at the end of the year. Dad felt that it was very promising, so he signed up and became one of the first professional managers of agricultural cooperatives in Chongzhou.

Later, I was admitted to a university in Chengdu. Every weekend when I came home, my father would talk to me about agriculture, from national policies to industry trends, from domestic examples to surrounding examples. Dad said to me: Farming is different now than before, and we need you young people with knowledge, so come back and help us after you graduate!
Dad's cooperative manages nearly 3,000 acres of fields, but only two links of ploughing and harvesting are machined, and the rest of the links such as rice planting are all manual. That day, for the first time, I had the idea of going back to help them, and I didn't want my parents to work so hard anymore. But I studied statistics in college, so I didn't know anything about farming. Therefore, before graduation, I went back to my hometown cooperative for an internship in advance. At 6 o'clock in the morning, I would follow the fields to learn the planting experience, and at 8 o'clock in the evening, I would continue to read books and take training classes to supplement my agricultural expertise. In just one month, I lost 10 pounds.
After graduating from university, I officially joined the cooperative. Some villagers don't understand, "Why did you go to college and come back to farm?" and someone else said: "This little girl is probably just here to have a good time, and she will definitely not be able to do it for long!"
Hearing this, my stubbornness immediately kicked in. In addition to reading books and going to the field, I began to participate in the training of agricultural professional managers, and successively studied at China Agricultural University and Sichuan Agricultural University, and successfully obtained the primary certificate of agricultural professional managers, becoming the first young "new farmer" in the country to hold a certificate. The professional study has given me a deeper understanding of agriculture, and the idea of farming has become clear: if you want to plant well, you need not only mechanization, but also intelligence.
Therefore, the first thing I did with the cooperative was to buy agricultural machinery, from rotary tillers, rice transplanters, to plant protection drones, harvesters, to automatic grain drying equipment, etc., we soon realized the whole process of mechanized farming, and the manpower was only one-tenth of the previous one. In 2020, we introduced various smart agriculture methods such as the Datian Beidou system, the "MAP Smart Farming" APP, and drone plant protection.
Science and technology farming has two obvious advantages. First, labor costs have been greatly reduced. We now have 7,000 acres of land, which is close to the size of a West Lake, and if we use traditional planting methods, we need at least 1,000 people. But we only had a team of 13 people. The second is to increase production. The 7,000 acres of land we manage, compared with the land that did not join the cooperative, produced 50 catties more grain per mu last year, and the total amount was 350,000 catties more.
These tangible advantages have enabled the scale of our cooperative to expand rapidly, and it has attracted more and more young people to return to the countryside. Take our team as an example, there are 13 people, 9 of whom are post-80s and 90s, and the youngest is 99 years old.
As of the end of February this year, there were more than 32,000 agricultural professional managers like me in Chengdu, of which more than 30% were young people born in the 80s and 90s. It is these more than 30,000 people who manage more than 80% of the city's agricultural production area.
