ZOOCO ESTUDIO, an architectural practice based in Madrid, Spain, and winner of the 2023 Architecture Master Award in the category "Small Firms for Interdisciplinary Interior Design", recently completed their project by the sea, the Cantabrian Oceanographic Museum Restaurant, seaside brutalism with concrete as the main element.

Located on Severiano Ballesteros Street in Puerto Santander, the Cantabrian Oceanographic Museum is part of an architectural complex designed with the Center for Maritime Geography, designed by Vicente Roig Forner and Ángel Hernández Morales and built between 1975 and 1978.

The original building consisted of two square concrete structural blocks connected by a canopy. The interior of the building is divided into three floors, surrounding a central courtyard covered by a parabolic vault. In 2003, the building was renovated and expanded, including an extension extending the west façade and an aluminium pyramidal structure on the terrace roof, thus changing the original concept of the building.

The project is located on the second floor of the museum, a new space that houses a restaurant and terrace. It consisted of creating a new mass and providing solutions for the weathering of roofs and building facades.

The square form of the project is the result of the addition of 4 triangles to the parabola of the original building, so that these parabolic concrete masses re-orient the interior space, forming on this level a restored element, a relic of the past and at the same time a unique decorative protagonist of the restaurant's interior. These concrete vaults are seen as an artistic element of the interior, serving as a unique view of the dining room, framed by triangular wooden false ceilings that embellish it.

The space is housed in a glass box that looks for maximum transparency (fine-tuned in the form of curtains depending on the orientation) through which guests can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the harbor of Santander, giving the impression of being on the sea.
