Yuemei Village – a living specimen of China's rural development process
From the Pinghe Station of Xiarong Expressway, you can see a three-dimensional layout village opposite Pingyao at a glance.

The village is close to the Yao Mountain on the west side of the Pinghe Pass, and houses are built on the mountain and gradually rise. The village has four distinct colors. The main color is black, including the chaomen, the ancestral hall, and dozens of Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings on both sides of the ancestral hall. Next to the black tile house is a set of yellow tone houses. Because the walls are made of mud. The yellow band is followed by a red band. It is a red brick house, all clear water walls, not painted. The red house occupies the highest position in the village, a bit like the Red Palace. At the front of the village are white houses. White is the color of the magnetic sheet.
The villages are distinctly colored and clustered. It reflects the economic and political landscape of an era. The biggest advantage of this village is that it is not demolished and built new. Comprehensively preserved and newly built, invisibly reflecting the trajectory of the changing times, I believe that this is the most complete reflection of the social development of the Shonan region. His name is Yuemei.
Yuemei Village belongs to Yizhang Pinghe Township.
The scenery of Tsukimei Village is beautiful. Backed by a large mountain, it is increased layer by layer, directly connecting to Wugai Mountain. The village seat faces west and east, and in front of the village is a flat and endless rice field. In early spring, the paddy fields are like a mirror, reflecting the sky light and shaking white; in summer, the green grass seedlings and frogs sing in unison; in late autumn, the rice is ripe and golden; in winter, pigs, cows and chickens walk in the fields, next to a white turnip of the red pepper dried by the farmers.
In the middle of the rice field, there is also a clear stream that meanders through the front of the village to the foot of the mountain to the south, but burrows into the mountain to become an underground river.
Yuemei Village is located next to the ancient Chenzhou Prefecture Capital's post road to Guguiyang County, halfway up the mountainside of Wugai Mountain. The Yuxi River, which originates from the Wugai Mountains, has alluvially accumulated a small flat mound of several hundred acres, called Pinghe Ya. The ancestors had already reclaimed the fertile land, and along the edge of the flat ridge, there were four or five small villages of different sizes, and the moon plum was the largest. There are more than two hundred households and more than a thousand people.
The earliest house was built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, built by the ancestors of the Yang clan who moved here from Jiangxi, and is located on the flat edge at the foot of the mountain. The green brick black tile horse head wall is typical of the Shonan residential style. From a distance, it was black. The buildings are exquisite, with stone brick carvings and wood carvings.
The yellow house is a product of the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, the policy of agricultural support for industry was implemented, and the state implemented centralized purchase and marketing of agricultural products. The poor scissors of industrial and agricultural products have caused the rural economy to wither. As the population grows, housing is just needed, and peasants can only build housing because of ugliness.
The red brick house is the product of the reform and opening up. The policy of guaranteeing production to households has greatly liberated rural productive forces. After the field is divided into households, the enthusiasm of the peasants is called a high. Families wake up early and get dark, men, women and children go into battle together, and the crops planted are also set by the farmers themselves. In addition to growing grain, farmers can also grow cash crops, and the barren mountains and wasteland are all reclaimed to plant sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes can not only be used as food, but also can be fed to pigs and dried sweet potatoes, which can be cashed out and sold. The peasants had a little more money, so they burned red bricks and built a red brick house with clear water. The quality is much better than dry base.
Joining the WTO is a huge historical event of this century. The Pearl River Delta three-to-one supplementary factories have sprung up like mushrooms, and China's economy has once again blown up. The new generation of farmers are not satisfied with planting land at home and have gone to Guangdong to work. Men enter the electronics factory, women enter the textile factory, and still talk about love and become a family outside. When you have a child, you put the child back to your hometown for the elderly to bring. It is no problem to earn tens of thousands of dollars a year from part-time work, which is much better than farming at home. After earning money, they build new houses to improve their quality of life. Later, the mountain was too high and close to the limit of land use, coupled with the relaxation of the farmland construction policy, farmers built houses on the front drainage field of the green brick house. These newly built houses are all patterns of the Pearl River Delta region, two or three stories high, red brick cement and steel structures. The façade is mostly plastered with white tiles, and this group of buildings is predominantly white.
Architecture is three-dimensional art and also solidified history. It does not speak, but in a unique language, it tells people about the road taken by rural development, without concealing it or telling lies.
In 2007, a movie about the education of the mountain village, "Heaven Over There", chose the village primary school as the location. I admire the director's vision. Since then, the quaint and beautiful Yuemei Ancient Village has begun to enter people's vision. In 2018, the village was listed as the fifth batch of traditional villages. We have every reason to believe that this village of unique value should be visited and remembered.
