In our daily life, plastic products at home may be damaged and broken due to aging, design defects or improper use. Indeed, some cheap ones can be just thrown away and re-bought, while some expensive or special plastic parts still have great maintenance value.
In this article, I will share with you my first repair and reinforcement process of household plastic products.

My wife bought a few cheap hangers, and when I arrived today, I found that one of them was broken.
I asked the seller to refund five cents, and then I was going to throw it away.
I took a look, and the hanger was pretty new.
Suddenly, I felt a little sympathetic to this hanger, the valuable things are worth repairing, and the five wool ones can only be thrown away.
So, I tried to repair this hanger and get some experience in repairing plastic parts.
Thinking of this, such a song suddenly appeared in the headphones, which was quite appropriate.
Come on, let's get a new lease on life.
Through observation, it is not difficult to see that the most fundamental cause of damage is that the mold design is unreasonable.
This right angle is obviously prone to stress concentration, which has also been mentioned in previous professional courses.
I discussed it with my daughter-in-law.
I said I can fix it, and it might be a little ugly after it is repaired, but it will definitely be durable, so I can't throw it away.
The daughter-in-law agreed.
Okay, get started.
Repair process
Plastic parts, if it is an ornament, it is actually very simple to simply restore the appearance.
To put it bluntly, just stick it, 502 or AB glue or something, and then don't touch it.
For hangers, it is obvious that this is not enough, the adhesive surface is too small, and there is a high probability that it will break in the future.
So, we have to do something stronger.
I first glued it with a random glue to fix the shape and make the original fracture surface fit perfectly.
At this time, while waiting for the glue to dry, you need to press continuously with your fingers.
After a few minutes of compression, I noticed that my hand was moving involuntarily.
So I used a little hot melt adhesive to help fix it, and it was easy to remove later.
Once you've wiped it, leave it alone and let it dry well.
The next thing is to add "stiffeners" to it, which I learned from the bumper repair video.
When they repair the bumper, they have this special wire heating device.
We can't use it once a year, so there's no need to buy it separately.
There's no wires that fit too well, so I'm using a few staples here, which are also seen from the short video.
I used a cheap soldering iron, ready to burn it in.
If you don't have an electric soldering iron, you can use tweezers to hold it and bake it on a lighter, and press it in, and the effect will be the same.
My goal was to get it in and use it as a stiffener.
Later, I reflected on it, and this straight-up and straight-down angle is not very good.
It should be heated with the two ends of the staples and pierced directly vertically, so that it is more stable.
Once heated, press it in and wipe the surface briefly.
I'm rough about it. If you have friends who pursue beauty, you can polish and smooth it in the future.
I don't think it's too necessary, the taste is very choking, it's better to solve it quickly.
In the same way, I strengthened the upper and back sides.
At this point, it is not afraid of the vertical pull, hang a wet thick pants, I tried it and it was no problem.
However, the problem of the design itself has not been solved, and if the side shear force is received here, it is still easy to break.
I couldn't find a good solution, so I ordered hot melt adhesive to be safe.
This also leads to an ugly appearance.
At this point, the hanger is considered to have been repaired.
Remove plastic scratches at high temperatures
And that's not all.
I've seen a tutorial on how to fix scratches on plastic chairs with a flamethrower, and today I repaired a headset and tested it with a frosted shell.
Following the tutorial, I set the temperature of the heat gun to 400°C and blow the air on the plastic parts.
The air outlet is 2 cm away from the surface, and the air gun moves evenly and repeatedly, without staying for a long time.
As far as I've observed, it is indeed possible to remove the capillary scratches on the plastic parts.
Capillary scratches can indeed be eliminated with this method.
Slightly deeper scratches require long-term heating, which can cause discoloration and deformation of plastic parts.
But when we look at one thing, the first thing we find is a large scratch, a deep scratch, just to remove the shallow ones is useless at all.
Therefore, I don't think this method is practical for daily handling of small objects, so I don't recommend you to try it.
postscript
Although this repaired drying rack is not very beautiful, but hanging on the drying rack, these flaws are not so obvious, and the practicality is still okay, and we can be regarded as making a little contribution to the cause of environmental protection.
With this fix, I gained some lessons:
- The soldering iron needs to be hotter, otherwise the wire will not easily sink into the plastic.
- When repairing, it must be in a ventilated place, when this polypropylene plastic is above 100 °C, the smoke is very choking and toxic, and it is possible to wear a mask.
- After the cosmetic restoration, the stress-concentrated areas need to be additionally strengthened to avoid re-damage.
- After the repair, the appearance is not very perfect, but it is not so obvious from a distance, and practicality comes first.
- The angle of wire fixing needs to be further optimized, so that the strength will be better.
