World Book Day
The anniversary of Cervantes' death
On April 23, 1616, Cervantes and Shakespeare died, but in England this day is an old calendar, so the dates are not actually the same. In 1995, UNESCO designated 23 April as World Book Day.
On the occasion of World Book Day and the anniversary of Cervantes' death, the Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House has launched a "new" complete translation of Don Quixote.

Don Quixote came to China for a much shorter period of time, and after several verses, 1939 saw the first non-verse translation of Don Quixote, translated by the famous translator Fu Donghua. In 1959, the People's Literature Publishing House published another two-volume full translation of Fu Donghua's edition, the first full Chinese translation of Don Quixote, three and a half centuries after the appearance of this classic. After Yang Jiang's Don Quixote came out in the late 70s of the last century, Fu Donghua's translation has been forgotten for nearly half a century. When comparing multiple translations, the publisher believes that Fu Donghua's translation still has advantages that are difficult to match with other schools—the language vividly conveys the lively playfulness of Cervantes, and at the same time restores the solemnity and elegance of the chivalric literary language used by Don Quixote. For example, in the book, Don Quixote's language is a kind of chivalric literature that was outdated at the time, and it is reflected in the English translation, roughly close to the tone of the characters in the Arthurian legend, while Fu Donghua deliberately uses a pretending to be elegant pseudo-archaic (Don Quixote only curses when he is angry), which is in sharp contrast to the lively and very down-to-earth language used by Sancho. Fu Donghua deliberately distinguished the tone of the two, which is rarely seen in other translations.
Now, after revising all the translations according to the Dictionary of Names, rewriting all the notes, correcting the errors in the original translation, and including more than 20,000 words of detailed and in-depth commentary by researcher John Olmsby, this complete translation has finally returned. Let's step into this story of laughter and tears of idealists again.
