Metuo, a small county town surrounded by mountains, is covered by heavy snow for nearly nine months of the year, and supplies here are all transported by fleet. In such harsh conditions, every voyage is a challenge to life. During a mission in August 1985, the Brahmaputra River flooded, trapping three villages in critical condition. He led his comrades-in-arms to brave the wind and waves and successfully moved nearly 400 people and more than 1,000 cattle and sheep to safety. This heroic act moved the Tibetan masses to call him a "living Buddha."
In addition to the rescue mission, he was also responsible for ensuring that important military supplies such as steel and cement arrived in Medog before the winter closure of the mountain. For one year, he and his crew worked almost around the clock, traveling 100 nautical miles every day to deliver 2,000 tons of building materials in a timely manner.
