In the early hours of April 23, the Laureus World Sports Awards Annual Awards Dinner took place in Madrid. Tennis player Novak Djokovic won the Best Male Athlete award for the fifth time. The Sportswoman of the Year award goes to Spanish women's footballer Bonmati. Qin Haiyang, the Chinese frog king who was nominated for the Best Breakthrough Award, unfortunately failed to win.

The award for best male athlete goes to Novak Djokovic, who won three Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open, French Open and US Open in 2023, bringing his tally of Grand Slam singles titles to a staggering 24. Djokovic has beaten Messi, Erling Haaland, Verstappen, Lyles, Duplantis and others.

Bonmati, who led the Spanish women's football team to her first Women's World Cup title, won the Female Athlete of the Year award. In addition to leading Spain to the World Cup, Bonmati also led Barcelona Women to La Liga and Champions League titles. Bonmatti defeated Cherika Jackson, Gippyegan, Shakkari Richardson, Swiatek and Schiflin.

In terms of the Breakthrough of the Year award, Qin Haiyang, the Chinese frog king who shone last year, failed to win the award, and it was Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham who won the award. Bellingham's career has taken a fresh leap since joining Real Madrid last year, scoring 21 goals and providing 10 assists in 36 appearances for Real Madrid this season.

Extreme Athlete of the Year – Alyssa Truw (the young athlete made skateboarding history last year, becoming the first female athlete to complete a 720-degree movement in a competition and a fruitful season)

Sports for Good of the Year – Fundación Rafa Nadal (a project that believes in the transformative power of sport and has helped more than 1,000 disadvantaged youth in Spain and India to reach their potential)

Team of the Year – Spain Women's Soccer Team (at the Women's World Cup, they showed resilience to win the World Cup for the first time)
