This article tells you the principle, influencing factors and solutions of pilling

People's clothes, quilts, pillowcases and other household textiles, after a long time of wear or use, often appear on the surface of the fabric small hairballs, which is what we often call pilling. This phenomenon not only makes the appearance and feel of the fabric worse, but also makes the fabric wear and tear, reducing the performance and service life of the fabric.

First, the process of fluffing and pilling

In the process of wearing, using or washing, the fabric is constantly subjected to friction, so that the fiber end of the fabric surface is exposed, and many hairs are formed on the surface of the fabric, this process is called fluffing; if the hairs fail to fall off in time, they are easy to entangle with each other, and finally form many small hairballs, this process is called balling; then the fibers connecting the hairballs are broken or pulled, and some hairballs leave the surface of the fabric and fall off.

2. Influencing factors of fluffing and pilling

1. Physical properties of fibers

  • Fibers with high strength, high resistance to repeated bending, and strong wear resistance are not easy to break and fall off when rubbing, and are easy to entangle with other fibers to form hairballs.
  • Long fibers have more frictional resistance than short fibers and are not easily pulled out of the yarn.
  • The fiber of special-shaped section has large bending stiffness, is not easy to bend and wind, and has a low probability of relative contact and friction, is not easy to pull and entangle, and is not easy to produce pilling.
  • The better the crimping of the fiber, the less easy it is for the fiber to stretch during twisting, and the fiber is easy to loosen and slip during the friction process, forming hairs on the surface of the yarn.

2. Yarn structure

  • The fiber arrangement in combed yarn is relatively straight, the fibers used are generally longer, the yarn hairiness is less, and it is generally not easy to pill.
  • The high-twist yarn can reduce the hairiness of the yarn and is not easy to pilling.

3. Fabric structure

  • Compactness: Fabrics with loose structures are more prone to pilling than fabrics with tight structures.
  • Surface flatness: Fabrics with uneven surfaces are more prone to pilling than fabrics with flat surfaces.

3. Pilling solution

For fabrics that are prone to fluffing and pilling, they can be treated with singeing, shearing, heat setting, bio-polishing, light fleece, etc., and for fabrics that are not satisfactory after treatment in the above ways, or fabrics that have been made into finished products, they can be finished with Texnology®ZW, a subsidiary of Guangzhou Lianzhuang Technology Co., Ltd.

The main ingredient of Texnology®ZW is modified colloidal polysilicic acid, which can effectively improve the slip resistance of fabric fibers, reduce the phenomenon of fiber extraction and clumping, and give the fabric a soft feel. It also reduces dry stain pick-up, which can help the treated fabric to become less stain-susceptible in the subsequent garment manufacturing process.
