Peony blossoms, fragrant and fragrant. In April 2024, on the occasion of the 41st China Luoyang Peony Cultural Festival, 88-year-old Professor Chen Shuguo visited Luoyang for the third time to organize the first Shenzhou Peony Wanhua Festival and International Peony Cut Flower Art Conference, and at the same time organized the 2024 annual meeting of the Peony and Peony Branch of the Henan Flower Association to contribute strength and wisdom to the peony cause and the peony industry. It can be said that the peony blossoms bloom again, and they meet every year.
Professor Chen Shuguo, a native of Sheqi County, Henan Province, was born on November 20, 1935. When I was a child, I was in troubled times, Japan invaded China, and the people were struggling to make a living. When he was young, he loved painting and aspired to become a painter, but during the exam, it rained heavily and the river crossing was blocked, so he had to transfer to an agricultural college. He graduated from the Department of Forestry of Henan Agricultural College in 1958, and worked in Yumen City, Gansu Province, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, and other places, and was transferred to the Department of Horticulture of Henan Agricultural University in 1985 as a lecturer, associate professor, professor and director of the Flower Teaching and Research Department, and concurrently served as the chairman of the Zhongzhou Bonsai Society of Henan Province, the Henan Flower Arrangement and Floral Art Association, the Peony and Peony Committee of the Henan Flower Association and the Chrysanthemum Committee.
Professor Chen Shuguo is not only bookish, not only superior, only realistic, do one line, love one line, conscientious, perseverance, pragmatic work, and finally achieve success. He has made profound achievements in the fields of flowers, horticulture, bonsai, flower arrangement, gardening, etc., and has made outstanding contributions to the development of Henan's famous flowers such as peony, yueji, chrysanthemum, plum, lotus, etc., and has cultivated batches of flower and horticulture students. He has edited and published five academic works, including "Ornamental Horticulture", "Woody Flower Propagation", "Woody Flower Cultivation", "Flower and Tree Plastic Pruning" and "Zhongzhou Bonsai", and participated in the co-editing and publication of three academic works, including "Guide to Yard Prosperity", "The Complete Book of Chinese Peony" and "Chinese Modern Moon Season". He has published more than 20 papers in national and provincial magazines, and has been rated as an outstanding expert and scientific and technological talent in Henan Province, and has enjoyed the special government allowance of the State Council since 1993.
In 1983, Professor Chen Shuguo and Comrade Yang Wenzheng co-chaired the project "Research on the Rapid Reproduction and Factory Production of Clones of Precious Varieties in the Moon Season", which won the second prize of Henan Province Science and Technology Progress Award and the second prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China. In 1995, he presided over the project of "Research on Tulip Bulb Reproduction and Flowering Period Regulation Technology", which won the second prize of Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. The projects he presided over such as "Research on the Cultivation of Precious Lotus and the Cultivation of New Varieties", "Research on the Cultivation and Introduction of Wang Lian in the Open Field" and "Research on the New Process of Root Art Baking Bed Treatment" and other projects won the third prize of Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.
Since his retirement at the end of 1995, Professor Chan has continued to pursue a career in flower and horticulture. Under the vigorous promotion of Mr. Li Shitian, Mr. Li Longzhang and Mr. Wang Shiduan, the Peony and Peony Committee of Henan Flower Association was established in Luoyang in April 1996, which played a role in coordination, guidance, bridge and link in standardizing the management of the peony industry, promoting the development of the peony industry, organizing peony flower activities, and promoting peony breeding and scientific research.
Professor Chen Shuguo is busy with the garden and flower business, responsible for holding a provincial peony, bonsai, flower arrangement and other exhibitions and academic conferences every year, and participated in the design and arrangement of the Henan delegation of the previous China Flower Expo, the Henan delegation of the 1999 Kunming World Horticultural Exposition, and the Henan delegation of the 2003 Hong Kong Flower Show, and achieved excellent results, making outstanding contributions to the flower and horticulture of Henan Province. In 2005 and 2009, he was rated as an advanced worker of the Flower Association by the China Flower Association.
At present, Zhengzhou has successfully bid to host the 11th China Flower Expo in 2025, and has now entered the stage of substantive exhibition arrangement.
Professor Chen Shuguo has a deep affection for peonies and has made great contributions. In 1993, he won the third prize of the National Spark Award and the second prize of the Henan Spark Award. The "Research on the Cultivation of Luoyang Peony in the Spring Festival in the South" presided over by him won the third prize of Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. He participated in the compilation of the "Complete Book of Chinese Peony", published peony papers such as "The Problem of Market-oriented Development of Peony and Entering Thousands of Households", took the lead in carrying out the "Research on the Quantitative Evaluation Method of Germplasm Resources of Luoyang Peony Varieties", established a mathematical model and computer program for peony evaluation, provided a quantitative basis for the breeding and marketing of new peony varieties, and often participated in the approval of new peony varieties as a team leader or deputy team leader. In organizing Henan Province to participate in international and domestic flower activities, attention is paid to highlighting the characteristics of Henan, especially the characteristics of Luoyang peony.
Professor Chen Shuguo is full of peach and plum all over the world, and I am fortunate to be a student of Mr. Chen. I still remember the first time Mr. gave a lecture, holding a pot of flowers on the podium, and said: This flower is called Sky Blue Hydrangea, also known as Sugen Phlox, with high ornamental value, it can be used as a potted flower, and can also be used as a flower bed, flower glasses, and ground cover; Mr. taught us Luoyang peony, led us to Luoyang Park nursery for internship, and let the students participate in the evaluation survey of peony ornamental characteristics, such a down-to-earth practical teaching, which is impressive. More than 30 years later, his teachings are still vivid.
This time, Professor Chen came to Luo, mainly to organize various peony flower activities. As a student of Professor Chen, I went to visit with great reverence, and the friendship between teachers and students was deeper than the sea.
In the Shenzhou Peony Garden, Professor Chen worked tirelessly, planning the activities of the Peony Wanhua Festival and guiding the peony flower arrangement, which is not at all like an 88-year-old old man. In between Professor Chen's guidance on flower arrangement, I moved a stool just to let Professor Chen rest for a while. Professor Chan sat for only three minutes before getting up and continuing his work, and his dedication and professionalism are very admirable.
On April 18th, Professor Chen was busy all day, working overtime after dinner, and organized the award of peony flower arrangement. On April 19th, he worked hard with his colleagues for the Peony Wanhua Exhibition. Hard work pays off. On April 20th, the first Shenzhou Peony Wanhua Festival and International Peony Cut Flower Fair was a complete success, opening a new door to success for Luoyang peony. At the same time, the annual meeting of Henan peony peony and the annual meeting of Luoyang Peony Association was also successfully carried out, and the experts and teachers gave lectures to provide suggestions for the development of Luoyang peony, seek common plans for the industry, and cheer for the flower expo.
Lao Ji is in the woods, and his ambitions are thousands of miles. Professor Chen Shuguo continues his beautiful career. Luoyang peony meets bosom friend, and the flower season is in full bloom.
