Throughout the eighties, the Soviet defense industry worked on the creation of promising major project tanks. For several years, the leading enterprises of the Soviet defense industry developed a number of promising projects that could change the face of the armored forces. One of them is Project 477, developed by the Kharkov Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering. The Kharkov Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering developed several projects in the eighties, but did not go beyond the scope of prototype tests. Project 477 was not designed from scratch, initially Kharkov engineers worked on Project 490, the goal of which was to create a new type of main battle tank using original layout solutions, many major innovations and new weapons.

Work on the design of the 477 project to equip the unmanned turret began in 1981. The draft design was completed in 1984, the technical design was completed in 1985, and the first prototype (model) was built in 1987. These vehicles were handed over to Russia after the collapse of the USSR. The crew sat inside the tank body. The 152-mm gun is equipped with an automatic loader with a rate of fire of up to 14 rounds per minute. The basic reload module holds 10 shells, and two modules with 12 rounds can also be added.
