Huashan Mountain, which is 69.7 meters above sea level, is the highest point in Feng County. The custom of burial in the Han Dynasty made Huashan the place with the highest concentration of Han tombs in Fengxian County.
Recently, in an archaeological excavation of "Donghua Mountain", we accidentally found a stone coffin tomb of a husband and wife buried in the middle and late Western Han Dynasty.
The discovery of this tomb not only enriches our understanding of the tomb culture in the Western Han Dynasty, but also provides valuable material for the inheritance and research of local history and culture.
The excavated pit husband and wife burial stone coffin tomb is located on the mountainside of "Donghua Mountain", with superior location and quiet environment. The structure of the tomb is basically intact, and although the coffin cover has collapsed, there are still cultural relics of the Western Han Dynasty preserved inside the stone coffin.
After the joint excavation of the Xuzhou Institute of Cultural Relics Protection and Archaeology and the Feng County Museum, a number of cultural relics were unearthed, including two five-baht coins (remnants), a Kouhan (talc) and bone remains. In addition, four clay pots (one of which was broken) and two five-baht coins were also found in the outer foot box of the coffin.
Five-Baht Money: The five-baht money was the main currency of the Western Han Dynasty, and its excavation not only proves the approximate age of the tomb, but also reflects the economic situation and currency circulation at that time.
Although the two five-baht coins are mutilated, their basic shapes and characters can still be identified, which is of great significance for the study of the monetary system of the Western Han Dynasty.
The Western Han Dynasty five-baht money, because the three-baht money and the four-dollar weight of the half-tael coin are used equally, so it led to the prevalence of piracy, so in the spring of the fifth year of the Jianyuan Dynasty, "the three-baht coin was abolished, and the line used half a tael coin".
In the fourth year of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty (119 B.C.), he re-minted three baht coins and minted leather coins and platinum (silver) coins, and also issued a death penalty for those who steal money.
In 118 B.C., Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty began to carry out the fourth currency reform in the fifth year of Yuanzhan (118 B.C.). This reform is only to "abolish the three-baht coin and recast the five-baht coin".
There are certain regulations on the shape of the five-baht coin, and the "five-baht" money has been used since then.
Kouhan (talc): Talc, as kouhan, is not uncommon in ancient tombs. It is often believed to have the effect of protecting the oral cavity of the deceased and preventing decay.
The talc unearthed this time has a delicate texture and regular production, reflecting the superb level of handicraft in the Western Han Dynasty.
Clay pots: The excavation of four clay pots further confirms the age of the tombs.
As a common vessel in ancient life, the shape and decoration of clay pots reflect the level of craftsmanship and aesthetic concepts at that time.
In particular, the fragment of one of the broken clay pots provides us with valuable information about the process and use of the pot.
The discovery of the stone coffin tomb of the husband and wife in the pit not only enriches our understanding of the tomb culture in the Western Han Dynasty, but also provides important material materials for the study of local history and culture.
The unearthed cultural relics in the tomb not only reflect the socio-economic conditions, monetary system and handicraft level at that time, but also reveal the burial customs and living customs of the people in the Western Han Dynasty.
In the Han tomb of Huashan in Feng County, many Han portrait stones have been unearthed. One of the stone carvings with the theme of saying goodbye to husband and wife comes from a general's tomb in Huashan, which is the most vivid and rich composition among the early Han portrait stone carvings found in Fengxian County so far.
In the picture, the husband who is about to go on the expedition is wearing a military uniform, and his appearance and demeanor are majestic and dignified. The wife beside him gave her hand, and her expression showed a reluctant feeling of farewell.
The discovery of the stone coffin tomb of the husband and wife in the middle and late Western Han Dynasty in "Donghua Mountain" in Huashan Town, Fengxian County is an important breakthrough in our understanding of the history and culture of the Western Han Dynasty.
