Luo Xiang: Every great work will make you know and understand yourself more

author:Mai reads the law reading

Books can expand our experience as individuals and connect us with the sum total of human experience.

Each other has a stake in us, whether it is past, present, or future, we all live in the story of the totality of the human experience, and we can all learn from the stories of others.

That's why we are moved when we read "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by the English poet John Donne:

No one is an isolated island, everyone is a part of the earth;

If a current washes away a lump of dirt, the continent loses a piece like a headland, like a friend or a home.

The death of any person hurts me, because I am intimately connected to humanity; So don't ask for whom the bell rings, it rings for you.

Whether it is fiction or non-fiction, it is actually a discussion of how human beings should choose in different situations.

Although we are unique, we are not unique in the total human experience.

We often say that everyone's joys and sorrows are not the same, which may be true from an individual point of view, but in the context of the total human experience, this is not accurate.

Every great work will make you know yourself more and understand yourself.

I love William Golding's Lord of the Flies, and every time I read it, I get to see the darkness in my heart again, and I feel more evil, darker, and more depraved than I ever imagined.

Dostoevsky's books will make you deeply aware of the complexity of human nature;

Huxley's Brave New World will make you reflect on technology and happiness.

In short, every great work is a question of your heart, helping you to reflect on yourself, get out of your prejudices, and make you wonder whether those self-righteous ideas are really infallible.

If you're hell-bent on success right now, I recommend a book that disappoints you, Balzac's Donkey Skin.

There is a piece of donkey skin in the world that can fulfill all your wishes, but as the wish is fulfilled, the donkey skin will shrink, and your life will be shortened, are you willing to accept this donkey skin?

If you're feeling proud and ambitious, you might be able to turn on Shakespeare's Macbeth, which reminds you not to be too attached to life in the spotlight:

"Life is just a walking shadow, a clumsy man who points fingers on the stage, appears for a moment, and then quietly retreats in silence and odorlessness. ”

If you are driven by a strong sense of mission, and even use others as tools for the sake of mission, I recommend reading Golding's other book, The Church Spire, which will make you reflect:

Is a self-imposed mission just a form of self-deception?

The more we understand the world, the more we understand ourselves.

"Retrial of the Strange Case of the Cave"

Luo Xiang: Every great work will make you know and understand yourself more

Word recommendation: This booklet brings together the translation of five judgments written by Fuller in 1949 and six new judgments published in the Harvard Law Review in 1999 and an introduction, hoping to express this enduring and eternal problem again in Chinese, and perhaps inspire legal professionals to further think about the relationship between law and human nature, morality and fairness, so as to promote the development and improvement of the legal system. As Professor Shapiro said, "fine wine does not need green vines, and lilies do not need to be gilded", and the story originally written by Professor Fuller is never finished, and the judgment of right and wrong is still extremely challenging, and it is worth thinking about for a lawyer's life. (Reference: This story is never over, and it is worth thinking about for a lifetime.) )

The Last Glass: The Reign and Fall of Prohibition in the United States

Luo Xiang: Every great work will make you know and understand yourself more

One sentence recommendation: The establishment and abolition of Prohibition affect intertwined social relations. The author of this book not only takes readers on a journey through the history of Prohibition, but also documents the picture of all corners of American society during the Prohibition period. The book barely spares a single character or detail of the Prohibition period. Through the vast archives, the author peels back the cocoon to show readers the entire process of the establishment and repeal of Prohibition. With extraordinary social insight, the author profoundly reveals the inextricable relationship between Prohibition and important historical events such as American people's living habits, religious beliefs, women's political rights, progressive movements, racial discrimination, changes in the federal government's revenue sources, the reorganization of federal and state government powers, the anti-German movement in World War I, and the rise of organized crime groups in the United States. It can be said that this "last cup" condenses the history of changes in modern American society, and is an excellent fulcrum for an in-depth understanding of American political ecology, legislation and justice, society and morality, and how to promote the development of the political agenda. The Nature of the Judicial Process

Luo Xiang: Every great work will make you know and understand yourself more

One sentence recommendation: "The Essence of the Judicial Process" is a classic work on judicial theory and a representative work of realist jurisprudence. At present, the judicial practice in mainland China is still facing various theoretical problems that urgently need to be clarified, and the ideas expressed by Judge Cardoso in this book have extremely important reference value. Mr. Wang Shaoxi, the translator of this book, is passionate about the basic theories of law while intensively cultivating civil and commercial law, and he chose to retranslate this book in the hope of reviewing and reflecting on the judicial practice of the mainland by drawing on the theory of realist law, so as to provide nourishment for the construction of the mainland's independent judicial theory.
