Chevron: Focus on post-processing, a new model to save money

On April 12, 2024, the 2024 Construction Machinery National Tour Promotion Conference hosted by HC Construction Machinery Network and supported by Guangzhou Construction Machinery Industry Association was successfully held at Jiayi Crown Hotel in Guangzhou!

At the scene, Mr. Lu Zhaoquan, senior technical engineer of Chevron lubricants, shared the theme of "Focus on post-processing, new model of saving money".

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the CPC Central Committee has put the construction of ecological civilization in a prominent position in the overall work. The exhaust emissions of non-road mobile machinery such as construction machinery are an important source of air pollution, so energy conservation and emission reduction have also become the ultimate goal of industry development.

If energy conservation and emission reduction is the ultimate goal of industry development, then emission regulations are the main driving force for energy conservation and emission reduction of construction machinery.

In October 2015, the third phase of the non-road emissions regulations will be implemented, and in December 2022, the fourth stage of the non-road emissions regulations will be implemented. China IV emission controls are significantly stricter than those in China III: nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are expected to be reduced by >13% and particulate matter (PM) emissions are expected to be reduced by >50%. Therefore, in order to control particulate matter emissions and meet more stringent emission limits, DPF will become the standard for non-road mobile machinery.

However, as the equipment works for long periods of time, particulate matter accumulates (clogs) in the particulate matter trap (DPF), and the engine needs to burn more fuel to increase exhaust emissions and increase the regeneration temperature, resulting in increased fuel consumption. That said, fuel economy losses can increase over time as particulate matter traps (DPFs) become clogged.

Particulate Matter Traps (DPFs) filter out the exhaust air with particulate particles mainly ash (ash) and soot (soot).

Excessive soot is mainly caused by idle speed and poor combustion, and diesel particulate filters burn off soot through "regeneration", which increases fuel consumption and downtime;

Ash is mostly an additive to the engine oil (e.g. detergent) and cannot be removed by "regeneration", and when it accumulates too much, the diesel particulate filter needs to be replaced or cleaned, and the diesel particulate filter can be clogged with low ash content (SAPS) oil.

As you can see in the chart below, almost all of today's new heavy-duty diesel engine oils are specified for low SAPS.

It can be said that the quality of oil directly affects the efficiency and fuel consumption of the engine, and the construction machinery and equipment as a typical "big oil eater", the choice of good oil is very important.

Founded in 1879, Chevron originated from the Standard Oil Company of the United States and has a history of 145 years. The business covers many countries and regions around the world, covering every sector of the energy industry, including upstream oil and gas exploration and production, midstream shipping and pipeline transportation, and downstream production and sales of fuel and lubricant products.

In the lubricant sector, Chevron is currently one of the world's leading suppliers of high-end base oils. Not only that, Chevron Oronite, one of the world's four largest manufacturers of lubricant additives, is also a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chevron. With the advantages of an integrated industrial chain, Chevron is one of the few lubricant manufacturers in the world that can achieve end-to-end supply from base oil to additives.
