What is a "bowl".
"Bowl" is a word in the Khitan language, which means the camp of the Liao Emperor, and in the first year of the Liao Dynasty (938), the sixteen states of Yanyun were obtained, and the Youzhou was promoted to Nanjing, becoming one of the accompanying capitals of the Liao Dynasty. Twenty-five miles of the city, set up Nanjing Road, called the South China Sea Youdu Mansion. The Khitan took fishing and hunting as their crops, and although they obtained the vast area of Yanyun, which was dominated by farming, they did not change their customs, and still maintained the so-called "four seasons bowl" system. Bowls refer to the custom of fishing and hunting that varies with the seasons and has its own content and location. The meaning of "bowl" is expressed very clearly in "Liao History: Yingwei Zhi": "Autumn and winter are cold, spring and summer are summer, and fishing with water and grass is normal." Each of the four seasons has a place to go, which is called a bowl." The Four Seasons Bowl is not only an ideal resort for the emperor to fish and hunt, practice martial arts and leisure, but also the main place for the emperor to discuss politics and the army and command the world.
Why did Nanyuan become in the Liao Dynasty
The land of "spring bowls".
"Spring bowls" refer to activities that are more inclined to fishing and hunting, and are required to be held in places where the lake is abundant. At that time, the area of Nanyuan was low-lying in a radius of 100 miles, and many flat land springs gushed out, forming a wetland of swamps and lakes. It can be said that "Zezhu River Hui, if the big lake Yinghai, it belongs to each other". A group of weeping willows, flowers, elk eating grass, gulls and herons gather in the natural ecology, and close to Nanjing, naturally become an ideal place for "spring bowl".
