Professor Yoshiaki Nakano is a well-known scholar in the Department of Electronics at the University of Tokyo, with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1982 and a Ph.D. in the Department of Electronic Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1987, and has been a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at the University of Tokyo since 2000. His research area is compound semiconductor optoelectronic devices, including semiconductor lasers, optical modulators, photonic integrated devices, multi-cell solar cell chips, etc., and Professor Nakano's team works in the Information Equipment Laboratory, the Advanced Science and Technology Research Center (RCAST), and the Smart Materials and Devices Laboratory. He has authored or co-authored hundreds of research papers, patents, and guest lectures.

Founded in November 2016, Zhongguang Research Institute and Zhongcun Laboratory is a scientific research institution that carries out the research and development of industrial technologies such as laser lighting, and grasps the direction of how to industrialize laser lighting. The institute is equipped with and introduced a number of domestic and foreign high-level professionals in related fields as the core backbone of the R&D team to carry out the research and development of laser technology in the field of display and lighting. Among them, Professor Shuji Nakamura, winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics, was introduced to set up the "Shuji Nakamura Laser Illumination Laboratory", with Mr. Shuji Nakamura as the director of the laboratory, responsible for the leading establishment and follow-up operation of the laboratory.

This visit is not only a part of Professor Nakano's personal academic journey, but also a microcosm of cross-border exchanges and cooperation in the field of science and technology.

Multi-party experts, industry-university-research in-depth exchanges, and collisions of ideas

During the visit, Professor Nakano was warmly received by Zhongguang Research Institute and Guangfeng Technology, and the leaders and professors of the School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering of Shenzhen University gathered at Guangfeng Technology to conduct on-site research and in-depth discussion on the development prospects of optoelectronic devices and various new application scenarios of laser display industrialization.

After visiting the exhibition hall of Guangfeng Technology Company and experiencing the wide application scenarios of laser display and laser lighting industrialization, experts from production, academia and research conducted extensive and in-depth discussions on the technology research and development and industrial application of semiconductor lasers. Professor Nakano expressed his appreciation for the achievements of Nakako Research Institute (Nakamura Laboratory) and Guangfeng Technology in the field of lasers, and shared his research experience in related fields. He said that he greatly appreciated the breakthrough and innovation made by Guangfeng Technology in laser phosphor display technology, and was deeply impressed by the industrialization achievements made by Guangfeng Technology in the fields of cinema, engineering, consumption, and vehicle.

At the same time, Professor Nakano also expressed his views on cross-border exchanges and cooperation in the field of science and technology. He believes that with the increasingly fierce competition in global science and technology, it is particularly important for countries around the world to strengthen scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation. Before the pandemic, Professor Nakano would come to China more than once a year. By sharing each other's research results and technical experience, we can not only jointly promote scientific and technological progress, but also provide strong support for technological innovation and industrial iteration and upgrading.

Yoshiaki Nakano: Compound semiconductor optoelectronic devices

In the subsequent discussion and exchange session, Professor Nakano delivered an academic report entitled "Compound Semiconductor Optoelectronic Devices".

Professor Nakano first systematically reviewed his own academic development, and then elaborated on the various research fields and outstanding achievements he has achieved in the Information Device Laboratory of the Advanced Science and Technology Research Center of the University of Tokyo.

He has devoted many years of effort to the field of semiconductor lasers, successfully fabricated GaAs semiconductor lasers using liquid-phase epitaxy technology, and worked closely with Academician Luo Yi to jointly publish a number of academic papers, including the pioneering research on gain-coupled distributed feedback semiconductor lasers.

Professor Nakano has led the team to expand their research horizons and has made fruitful academic achievements in a variety of cutting-edge fields, such as optical modulators, large-scale integrated photonic devices, and high-efficiency multi-stage solar cell chips.

In addition, Professor Nakano also passionately shared the glorious history of the previous leaders of the laboratory, and vividly depicted the semiconductor laser innovations created by the predecessors in GaN, GaAs and other material systems by displaying a series of precious historical photos, highlighting the profound historical heritage and outstanding contributions of the laboratory.

At the end of the discussion, Professor Nakano also humorously said: "There are many research topics in the field of compound semiconductor optoelectronics, especially seeing that Guangfeng Technology has achieved great success in using GaN-based blue light lasers to excite fluorescent materials for laser display; I would like to recommend Guangfeng's laser (display technology) to more friends, and hope that Japanese theaters can also use ALPD laser display technology as soon as possible. ”

"In the future, I am willing to travel more to China and make my own contribution to Sino-Japanese scientific and technological cooperation. Professor Nakano said that this international academic exchange not only enhanced the friendship and cooperation between Professor Nakano, Zhongguang Research Institute (Nakamura Laboratory) and Guangfeng Technology, but also injected new vitality into the transnational exchanges and cooperation in the laser industry in the future. It is believed that in the future, we will carry out in-depth cooperation in the field of optoelectronics industry, university and research to jointly promote global scientific and technological progress and development.
