Henning Larsen's Volvo World embraces nature with a wooden canopy

author:Taomu Net

Henning Larsen unveiled his latest architectural marvel in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Volvo World Exhibition and Events Center, which features a unique "forest-like canopy" roof structure. Commissioned by Swedish automotive giant Volvo Cars and the Volvo Group, the 22,000-square-metre rotunda has a roof inspired by nature.

Made of glued-laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT), the building is characterized by the arrangement of a large number of wooden columns that mimic the shape of the trunk, creating a warm and organic atmosphere. The pillars rise and extend outward, supporting the roof while enveloping visitors under a canopy reminiscent of a dense forest.

As part of Volvo's anniversary celebrations, Volvo World aims to showcase the brand's rich history and values with events, exhibitions, lectures and conferences. Located in Gothenburg's vibrant activity district, the center aims to provide visitors with an intimate space in close connection with nature.

The design concept draws inspiration from Sweden's natural landscape, and the layout and materials of the building reflect the country's "Allemansrätten" spirit, which is to roam freely in nature. The use of wood is not only in line with sustainable practices, but also reflects the regional landscape in both form and material.

The building features a glass curtain wall with a wide staircase along its exterior, providing seating opportunities and easy access to the landscaped gardens on the roof. The upper floor, adorned by glass walls, houses exhibition spaces, a bar, a restaurant, meeting facilities and workspaces.

Henning Larsen's design philosophy emphasizes the synergy between organic materials and forms, equating the architectural elements of the structure with natural phenomena. Deeply rooted in Norse mythology and Volvo's Swedish heritage, the tree's metaphor symbolizes life, growth, and connection, further enriching the building's narrative.
