Recently, the pedigree-like manta ray soft-body submersible developed by the independent underwater vehicle team of the School of Navigation of Northwestern Polytechnical University has realized the monitoring of the growth of coral reefs in the South China Sea for the first time.

It is understood that the team has been researching manta ray submersibles since 2016, and has made breakthroughs in many key technologies such as fluid-structure interaction simulation calculation of bionic fluid shape optimization design and pectoral fin beating, integrated propulsion design of sliding flutter in motion, and smooth switching control of high-similarity multi-modal motion. The team launched the newly developed 30 kg and 720 kg manta ray soft body submersibles for the coral growth and reef cornerstone deposition scenarios of islands and reefs in the South China Sea, so as to build a lineage of bionic intelligent submersibles from flexible small-scale to functional large-scale.

At present, the manta ray submersible has carried out a number of tasks such as long-distance gliding and in-situ resident covert detection, high biological affinity and small interference coral reef ecological monitoring, wide area or fixed depth or resident hydrological fine collection, and alternative protection of rare animals in the aquarium, and completed more than 200 operations, realizing a breakthrough in the technical application of mainland bionic underwater equipment towards practicality.
