Zuo Quan was born in 1905 in a peasant family in Liling County, Hunan Province. When he was one and a half years old, his father died, and he participated in farm work such as herding cattle and collecting pigweed in the mountains at a very young age. In 1924, Zuo Quan gave up literature and martial arts, was admitted to the first phase of the Whampoa Military Academy, and then joined the Communist Party of China. In 1925, Zuo Quan participated in the Northern Expedition and performed well, and was quickly promoted to company commander. In December of that year, he went to the Soviet Union to study, first at Sun Yat-sen University in Moscow, and then transferred to the Frunze Military Academy for further study.

In 1930, Zuo Quan returned to the Central Soviet District and joined the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, becoming an important commander of the Red Front Army. During the Long March, he led his troops to break through the enemy's encirclement many times, and made great contributions to the victory of the Chinese revolution.

After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Zuo Quan served as the deputy chief of staff of the Eighth Route Army, the chief of staff of the forward headquarters of the Eighth Route Army, and later served as the commander of the Second Corps of the Eighth Route Army.

In May 1942, the Japanese army launched a large-scale "sweep" against the Taihang anti-Japanese base area. On the 25th, Zuo Quan commanded troops near Matian, Liao County, Shanxi Province to cover the breakthrough and transfer of the Northern Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army, and unfortunately died at the age of 37. Zuo Quan's sacrifice is a great loss to our party, and his heroic deeds and lofty spirit have become a monument in the history of the Chinese people's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

After Zuo Quan's martyrdom, Zhou Enlai personally arranged for his old mother's support. A memorial service was held for him in Yan'an and Taihang Mountain Base Areas, and the government of the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Border Region changed the name of Liao County, where he died, to Zuoquan County. In a small box left by Zuo Quan, there were 11 unsent letters from home, as well as two unpublished military works of more than 100,000 words: "On the Principles of Military Thought" and "The Combat Instructor Work of the Eighth Route Army."

In August 1949, when the People's Liberation Army advanced into Hunan, Commander-in-Chief Zhu De ordered all troops entering Hunan to make a detour to Liling to visit the heroic mother. The young soldiers sang "The Song of General Zuo Quan" and came to Zuo's house.

The 84-year-old Zuo Quan's mother, who was paralyzed, asked when she saw the troops: "Has my son returned?" The commanders and fighters said: "Zuo Quan has not returned, we are all your sons!"

The old man wanted to cry without tears, so he asked someone to write an article: "My son has become a benevolent person in resisting Japan, and he has died a well-deserved death, and he is worthy of being an aspiring man." Now that we have succeeded in the liberation of democracy, we have sacrificed our lives, what is the pity, my son knows, and the underground is limited!"

In October 1950, the central government decided to move Zuo Quan's coffin from Taihang Mountain to the Shanxi, Hebei, Luyu Martyrs Cemetery in Handan. Zhou Enlai personally inscribed "The Tomb of General Zuo Quan", and the inscriptions of Zhu De, He Long, Xie Jueji and other comrades were inscribed on the stele of white marble.

Heroes are immortal, and the light lives on. Zuoquan Town, Zuoquan Road, Zuoquan Red Army Primary School...... In Liling, the hometown of General Zuo Quan, people place their affectionate remembrance of Zuo Quan in various ways, inherit the red gene, and continue the red blood.
