With the return of former Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou to Taiwan Island from his visit to the mainland, new changes have taken place in the cross-strait situation. First, the mainland's stance on Taiwan has been further clarified, that is, it is to do its utmost to promote peaceful reunification and integrated development; second, cross-strait political exchanges must follow the political basis of recognizing the "consensus of '92" and opposing "Taiwan independence"; and finally, the mainland has insisted on both cross-strait exchanges and fighting "independence" and promoting reunification. At a time when the cross-strait situation was heating up, Ma Ying-jeou bravely acted as an "icebreaker" to run for peace in the Taiwan Strait, and while gaining a lot of prestige, he also pointed out a certain direction for the KMT. Recently, Xia Liyan, vice chairman of the Kuomintang, said that he would visit the mainland in late April, and there were two specific schedules, one was to participate in cultural activities to worship Xia Yu, and the other was to care for Taiwan businessmen in the mainland.
Xia Liyan's visit is fundamentally different from that of Ma Ying-jeou, and the KMT's current foreign policy has already been showdowned, that is, the so-called "pro-US, friendly Japan, and the mainland," and the development of relations with the United States and Japan ranks ahead of the mainland. Correspondingly, Xia Liyan recently visited Washington, and in the face of US think tank personnel and administrative department officials, Xia Liyan bluntly said that "the Kuomintang will always be the closest friend of the United States", saying that the United States is the "most important partner" of the Taiwan region in security commitments, arms supply, student exchanges, and technology transfer in the business community, in addition, Xia Liyan also participated in the "US-Japan Taiwan Military Push" held by the US think tank, and its target is directly aimed at Chinese mainland. In this political stance, the Kuomintang has a vague attitude toward the "consensus of '92," and its expectations for cross-strait relations are limited to the absence of military conflicts, and "maintaining the status quo" is its greatest goal. Therefore, Xia Liyan's trip to the mainland is just a simple visit, and there is a high probability that the mainland's high-level officials will not have political contact with him, and the gold content of Xia Liyan's visit to the mainland is not the same as that of Ma Ying-jeou.
It cannot be ruled out that Xia Liyan has two major motives for temporarily changing his plan to visit the mainland in the United States: one is to take advantage of Ma Ying-jeou's "hot spots" and use the visit to the mainland to save the KMT's declining situation on the island and enhance its political prestige; and second, to follow the US strategy to show "loyalty" On 14 April, US Assistant Secretary of State Conda and other senior officials visited China again, and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also announced plans to visit China in the future.
Recently, the Taiwan authorities announced that they would conduct a field shooting training near Chimoto Beach in Taitung on 17 April, and the exercise was actually a "new version" of the Kinmen exercise on 2 April, with the difference being that the location and time had changed, and the islands such as Kinmen and Lieyu had been transferred to the Taitung area, so as to avoid accidentally injuring mainland fishermen due to being too close to each other, which would lead to an "early showdown" of the PLA, and had avoided US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's visit to China in terms of time, but what remained unchanged was the Taiwan authorities' attempt to seek "independence."
In this regard, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council recently made clear its position, stressing that the DPP authorities' vain attempt to "seek independence by force" is beyond their own strength and is bound to fail. The weight of the last eight words of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council is not insignificant, which means that the mainland's patience with the Taiwan authorities is being lost, and if the Taiwan authorities still do not have a clear understanding of the situation, the PLA's future action will not be to "knock on the mountain and shake the tiger," but to "go straight to the Yellow Dragon," and the Kuomintang must remain sober-minded.
