"The power of literature does not necessarily lie in directly transforming the world, but it can imperceptibly influence and inspire people. Reading is like a journey of chasing the light, breaking down prejudices, fallacies, and barriers, and making people transparent and bright. On the afternoon of April 14, the Shanghai Children's Book Promotion Association and the Children's Publishing House invited children's literature writer Qin Wenjun to the lecture hall of the library of Shanghai Business School to bring readers a parent-child lecture with the theme of "Literature is Power".

Qin Wenjun

In the lecture, Qin Wenjun talked about her creative career, and the reason why she has been able to persist in writing for more than 40 years is that she firmly believes that children's literature is an encyclopedia to help children find happiness, and can plant the seeds of yearning for truth, goodness and beauty in children's hearts. She said that writing about children should be rooted in children's spiritual world, and their perspective and aesthetics should be rooted in society and human nature. Children naturally love good-looking, interesting stories and have a natural yearning for reading. However, the availability of electronic products, the global Internet, and the endless fast-food culture have all become obstacles to immersing children in the vast and deep sea of books. How to make today's children have the motivation to read for a long time is not only a question that parents and teachers, but also the whole society should discuss and think about.

As a mother, Qin Wenjun gave an example of how to train her children to develop reading habits. In order to make her daughter fall in love with reading as a child, she tried to adapt classic children's stories into short plays, play the roles in the book with the children, and decorate the home into scenes in the book, so that the children can get an immersive reading experience and create a strong family reading atmosphere. This is the inspiration for the "contextual reading and writing" theory later created by Qin Wenjun and the Shanghai Children's Book Promotion Association.

Many readers who participated in the event brought Qin Wenjun's masterpiece - "The Complete Biography of the Boy Jarry" for the 30th anniversary of the publication. The witty and intelligent "Boy Jiali" is a well-known literary image in the corridor of Chinese children's literature in the new era, accompanying the growth of four generations of young readers, and the cumulative sales of the series of books have exceeded 10 million copies. "The Complete Biography of Boy Jarry" is not only a campus novel, but also literary images such as "Boy Jarry" and later "Girl Jarmei", "Little Girl Lin Xiaomei" and "Little Ghost Lu Zhisheng" have become vivid representatives of the life and individual characteristics of contemporary Chinese children and teenagers. Qin Wenjun said that excellent children's literature is in line with children's nature, can arouse the emotion in children's hearts, as well as interesting and wonderful stories and imagination, and has a distinctive and unique artistic image. Children who love to read children's literature tend to be more prominent in language expression, interpersonal communication, and frustration and stress resistance.

According to the organizers of the event, the "Contextual Reading and Writing" series of activities will continue to be promoted this year to provide more citizens with high-quality reading services, help children break down the barriers of reading and writing, and let the light of reading illuminate more families.
