According to a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple plans to start updating its Mac lineup by the end of 2024 with the new M4 series chips, which will focus on improving AI performance.

Last October, Apple launched the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips at the same time, so we may also see the launch of the M4 series around the same time.

Gurman said the entire Mac product line is expected to receive the M4 update by the end of 2024 to the beginning of 2025. The first to update the M4 chip will be the iMac, the 14-inch series MacBook Pro, the 16-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini models.

Subsequently, in the spring of 2025, Apple went on to update the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models, update the Mac Studio in mid-2025, and update the Mac Pro later in 2025.

According to the report, Apple is about to start production of the M4 processor, and at least three main variants are expected. The chips are codenamed Donan (low-end), Brava (mid-range), and Hidra (high-end).

Among them, the Donan chip will be used in the entry-level MacBook Pro, MacBook Air models, and low-end Mac mini, while the Brava chip will be used in the higher-end MacBook Pro and higher-end Mac mini.

The Hidra chip, on the other hand, is designed specifically for the Mac Pro, indicating that it is a "super" or "pinnacle" chip. As for the Mac Studio, Apple is testing a version with an unreleased M3-era chip and an M4 Brava processor variant, which could be at a higher level than the M4 Pro and M4 Max "Brava" chips.

It is reported that Mac desktop models with M4 chips may support up to 512GB of unified memory, which will be a significant increase in the current limit of 192GB.

The M4 chip will be manufactured using the same 3nm process as the M3 chip, but Apple's supplier TSMC will likely use a modified version of the 3nm process to improve performance and energy efficiency. Apple also plans to add a vastly improved Neural Engine, the number of cores of which will be increased to perform more complex AI tasks.

Although the M3 series chips have been released last year, Apple has not yet updated the M3 chip version of its Mac Studio or Mac Pro, and the outside world speculates that the M3 series chips may not be significantly improved enough, and Apple wants to wait for the M4 to be released before updating a big wave~
