Professor of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge, but to cultivate oneself

The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge, but to cultivate oneself.

Now reading is no longer considered a serious, serious, and something that must be faced, and reading is not as persistent and important as before, so there is the question of how many years after graduation and whether to read.

After knowledge became readily available, the original three functions of reading—reading, seeking knowledge, and cultivating—were all affected.

In the past, when we read books, knowledge and self-cultivation were synchronized, now the level of knowledge seeking is replaced by retrieval, as long as we know the title of a book and the name of a person, retrieval is enough.

And the function of reading emphasizes the entertainment function more. After the original state of hard pursuit and searching up and down disappeared, knowledge was there, but cultivation was gone.

We used to admire Su Dongpo's poems "with poetry and books in the belly", and when we read more, the bookish spirit that ordinary people say comes out. Today, after my reading and cultivation are no longer synchronized, the shaping of personality, soul, temperament, and external image by reading has been cut off, which is a very serious problem.

This generation is my age in a transitional era, we are growing up in the age of books, and on the other hand, we are catching up with the digital age, and we can understand on both sides.

The next few generations of young people may have entered the digital age before they had time to understand the previous era. I have an understanding of how the upper and lower generations read, so I will feel emotional.

But for young people, lessons are useless, so I write down my reading experience, maybe there are some books that arouse their interest, and how many people can be influenced in the books.

In today's era of overwhelming information, it is difficult to establish one's own reading interest, to let one's position, vision and interest not be tempted by the surrounding environment. With the mass media, the homogenization of reading is too serious.

In fact, everyone's reading is different, and it is completely normal for a mathematician and a literature professor to have different interests. Readers should first establish their own reading interest and base point, and then talk about reading after having that base point.

The phrase "open book is beneficial" is often mentioned and has a deep impact, but I think that "open book is beneficial" as a slogan is worth scrutinizing.

Why is it opened??

Now we know that people who read a lot will succeed, but many people who don't read are also successful, and there are many more people who have read books all their lives without success, so reading books may not be successful, or "open books" may not be "beneficial".

Getting everyone to understand the slogan "Open books are good" is problematic in itself, because age, occupation, mood, reading goals, and so on can affect your reading.

Many famous sayings about reading books have been recited in ancient and modern times, but most of them are actually aimed at specific groups of people. It is not the same for ordinary readers, literati, officials, and emperors to talk about reading. For example, Wang Guowei borrowed Song Ci to talk about the "three realms" of reading, which is more suitable for scholars than for others.

Everyone has their own experience, and a really good state is to constantly summarize their own path and then make adjustments on their own. For any person who reads, his reading method is basically only suitable for himself.

In the article "Reading as a Social Method", I recommended Zhang Taiyan's ideas. Mr. Zhang Taiyan repeatedly emphasized that the knowledge of life is far less than that of teachers and teachers, and it is far less than the social experience and life sorrows.

In other words, what he learned from his teacher was far less than what he gained from social experience and his own life plan, so I summarized his experience of reading:

  • First, learning is basically based on self-study;
  • Second, if you really don't understand, you can ask for advice;
  • Third, reading must link life planning with book knowledge in order to have a truly in-depth experience.

The Nature of the Judicial Process

Professor of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge, but to cultivate oneself

One sentence recommendation: "The Essence of the Judicial Process" is a classic work on judicial theory and a representative work of realist jurisprudence. At present, the judicial practice in mainland China is still facing various theoretical problems that urgently need to be clarified, and the ideas expressed by Judge Cardoso in this book have extremely important reference value. Mr. Wang Shaoxi, the translator of this book, is passionate about the basic theories of law while intensively cultivating civil and commercial law, and he chose to retranslate this book in the hope of reviewing and reflecting on the judicial practice of the mainland by drawing on the theory of realist law, so as to provide nourishment for the construction of the mainland's independent judicial theory.

Posner

Professor of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge, but to cultivate oneself

Recommendation: Professor Zheng Ge's vivid and accurate translation recreates in the Chinese world Posner, the most creative, prolific jurist and judge in the United States who has an unrivaled academic and judicial citation rate! Posner's career after retirement seems to be contrary to his career as a judge, and even to smash the job of a lawyer, but it is precisely to solve the general problems that he observed during his tenure as a judge that go beyond specific cases. He criticized his academic peers when he taught at the university, criticized judges and courts when he was a judge, and as a public intellectual, he didn't say what the public wanted to hear. Perhaps, none of the labels of judge, jurist, or public knowledge can sum up Posner as a person. And this biography can help us see the complex and complete Posner behind the various labels. Sex and the Law

Professor of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge, but to cultivate oneself

Recommended words: "Sex", when a natural behavior is endowed with social significance, as a tool for power to realize the will, the way we look at it often changes with the game of social forces, and finally the concept of winning the Iron Throne is confirmed and enforced through the law, and then regulates the boundaries of everyone's behavior and enters people's hearts. This book is written by the former dean of the University of Chicago Law School, and for every reader who is concerned about the topic of sexuality and gender, may you think deeply about the grand history of 3,000 years and construct your own concept of sexuality. Columbia University Chancellor Lee C. Bollinger highly recommends: This book is sure to have a profound impact, and it will soon be on the required reading list, not only for law students and scholars, but also for all those who want to better understand this magnificent cultural change that will continue to shake society as a whole. The Last Glass: The Reign and Fall of Prohibition in the United States

Professor of Peking University: The most critical function of reading is not to seek knowledge, but to cultivate oneself

One sentence recommendation: The establishment and abolition of Prohibition affect intertwined social relations. The author of this book not only takes readers on a journey through the history of Prohibition, but also documents the picture of all corners of American society during the Prohibition period. The book barely spares a single character or detail of the Prohibition period. Through the vast archives, the author peels back the cocoon to show readers the entire process of the establishment and repeal of Prohibition. With extraordinary social insight, the author profoundly reveals the inextricable relationship between Prohibition and important historical events such as American people's living habits, religious beliefs, women's political rights, progressive movements, racial discrimination, changes in the federal government's revenue sources, the reorganization of federal and state government powers, the anti-German movement in World War I, and the rise of organized crime groups in the United States. It can be said that this "last cup" condenses the history of changes in modern American society, and is an excellent fulcrum for an in-depth understanding of American political ecology, legislation and justice, society and morality, and how to promote the development of the political agenda.

Word recommendation: This booklet brings together the translation of five judgments written by Fuller in 1949 and six new judgments published in the Harvard Law Review in 1999 and an introduction, hoping to express this enduring and eternal problem again in Chinese, and perhaps inspire legal professionals to further think about the relationship between law and human nature, morality and fairness, so as to promote the development and improvement of the legal system. As Professor Shapiro said, "fine wine does not need green vines, and lilies do not need to be gilded", and the story originally written by Professor Fuller is never finished, and the judgment of right and wrong is still extremely challenging, and it is worth thinking about for a lawyer's life. (Reference: This story is never over, and it is worth thinking about for a lifetime.) )

One sentence recommendation: From the worries of the "information cocoon" and the "echo chamber" to the description of the "Republic of Labels", Sunstein is concerned about the crisis of Western democracies in the age of social media, that is, the world of labels as the basis for algorithms will bring about the fragmentation of democracy. It is for this reason that this is a book full of paradoxes and uncertain hopes, a book of reflections of a professor at Harvard Law School in the United States, who served as director of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.
