Brown Hill Residence is a minimalist home located in Brown Hill, Australia, designed by Eldridge Anderson.
The building cleverly employs stepped floors to divide family areas and features a spacious central courtyard. The courtyard was intentionally hewn out of the building massing to bring natural light into the interior, and the design was inspired by the nearby eucalyptus trees.
Catering to the needs of a family of three boys, this home prioritizes the durability of everyday life. It takes care of the children's activities while maintaining a private space while also providing a variety of seating areas for individual activities.
One of the defining architectural elements of the residence is the sloping courtyard eaves, whose graceful arc unifies the main living spaces under a single roofline that adjusts as the terrain descends. This sloping eaves are not only aesthetically pleasing, they also unify the functional areas of the dwelling, as the wood-framed windows can be turned, thus optimizing the practicality of the interior space.
The choice of materials is deliberately restricted, enhancing the coherence of the design and the connection to the landscape. Concrete masonry forms the main structural wall, which ages naturally and contrasts with the texture of the environment.
Inside, the concrete flooring throughout the social area is durable and acts as a temperature regulator through its thermal mass. The wood used on the doors, windows and terraces adds warmth to the house's otherwise cool material tones.
At the entrance to the house, a formal entrance and terrace leads to a study and a secluded area for garages and utilities. The multi-purpose hall serves as a transition to the bedrooms and extends to the rear of the house where there is a spacious open plan kitchen, living room and dining area that opens onto a wide terrace and garden.
The courtyard is at the heart of the design, promoting visual synergy between spaces while bringing the sunshine of the north into the depths of the interior.
