On the 25th local time, a large-scale grounding of pilot whales occurred in Toby Bay in southwest Australia.
On the 25th, in Toby Bay, about 236 kilometers south of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, as many as 160 pilot whales stranded on a beach more than 500 meters long along the coast. At present, some pilot whales have been confirmed dead.
Southwest Regional Officer, Australian Biodiversity Commission, Kudis: There is another spot near the coast where 110 pilot whales have gathered together, and hopefully they won't run aground, but they may swim to shore.
Local wildlife experts and volunteers have been pouring water on the surviving whales and rescuing them, as well as trying to guide some of the pilot whales that can move back into the deep waters. Experts say that the chances of survival of stranded whales are slim.
It is reported that the pilot whale is more than 6 meters long, and it is not uncommon for whale stranding to occur in Oceania. In 2022, about 500 pilot whales died in stranding in New Zealand's Chatham Islands. According to research from the University of Western Australia, pilot whales are highly social animals with close-knit groups, and when an individual is in danger for reasons such as predation or disease, other members will follow closely.
