The film is based on the autobiographical novel --- "Treasure" published in England in 1952 by the heroine Han Suyin (this is a pen name), and the original book (written in English) is called A Many Splendoured Thing. Han Suyin (ancestral home in Shuizhai Town, Wuhua County, Guangdong) was born in Henan, she was very smart since she was a child, she worked as a typist at Peking Union Medical College at the age of fifteen, and was admitted to Yenching University at the age of seventeen, but in college, she was discriminated against because she was of mixed Chinese and European descent, went to Europe at the age of nineteen to study medicine at Brussels (the capital of Belgium), and returned to China three years later and married an officer Tang Baohuang. She began her writing career as a midwife in a hospital in Chengdu, and her first novel was based on her experiences living in Chengdu.

In 1944, at the age of 28, she left China to continue her medical studies in England, while her husband died in 1947 during a battle in the Northeast. After graduating in medicine in 1948 and returning to Hong Kong in 1949 to intern at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong, she met her second love, an American journalist who was unfortunately killed in South Korea in 1950. Han Suyin wrote the story of their love from realization to love into a novel to mourn this relationship. Later, in 1955, the novel was made into a movie, "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing."
