In 1952, a South Korean woman bid farewell to two American soldiers under the watchful eyes of her husband. South Korea struggled financially after the war, and many families had to rely on their wives to provide services for the U.S. military.
In South Korea, providing services to the US military has become an economic tool, but at the same time a forced choice. These women, known as "comfort women", experienced the double torture of Japanese aggression and national pressure.
In order to meet the needs of the U.S. military, the South Korean government has set up a special service and sees these women as the "fifth supply" of the U.S. military. They were sent to the front line to serve American soldiers.
However, this practice did not improve the economic situation in South Korea, but only exacerbated the suffering of the comfort women. In 1962, the South Korean government officially incorporated comfort stations into the national system.
Comfort women, nicknamed "foreign princesses", underwent a variety of training and physical examinations to ensure the quality of service. The government has also vigorously developed comfort stations to meet the needs of the U.S. military.
However, these practices did not bring real independence and development to South Korea. Despite the U.S.-South Korea Mutual Defense Treaty with the United States, South Korea remains dependent on U.S. support.
During the Park Chung-hee administration, South Korea conducted a so-called "purification campaign" that brutally punished comfort women and led to the deaths of many women.
Until the 80s of the last century, more than 1 million South Korean women served in the US military, and they suffered severe physical and mental trauma.
Now, Korean women are gradually waking up to the fact that we should face up to history and give comfort women the respect and compensation they deserve. South Korea should get rid of its dependence on the United States and find its own path of development.
