In the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals, Atletico Madrid defeated the fierce rival Dortmund from the Bundesliga at the Metropolitano Stadium!
From the start of the game, Atletico took advantage of a mistake by a Dort defender to take the lead. Depay's pass was cut off by the young Dutchman Mazn, but his slightly reckless pass was caught by De Paul, who cleverly slotted the ball into the Borussia Dortmund goal with the outside of his right foot.
Axel Witsel then threatened Dort's goalkeeper Kerber with a header, but the goal was not awarded due to offside. In the 32nd minute of the first half, Atletico made a comeback, and Lino took advantage of a communication error by Dortmund defenders Schlotterbeck and Hummels to easily hit the ball into the net to extend the score to 2-0.
Borussia Dortmund had chances late in the first half, with Nmecha's set-piece header just over the crossbar and Adeyemi's powerful shot just wide. Overall, though, Atletico dominated the first half.
Dortmund stepped up their attacking efforts, but Atletico's backline remained solid, with goalkeeper Oblak defusing Dortmund on several occasions. In the 75th minute of the game, the situation changed dramatically, and Borussia Dortmund substitute Harrell took advantage of an opportunity to break through Oblak's ten fingers and make the score 1-2.
After pulling a goal back, Dortmund's morale was boosted and they came close to equalising in the final moments of the game. It was Gittens' long-range shot that bounced off the post, and then Brandt's header bounced off the crossbar.
In the end, the match ended with a score of 2-1. With home advantage and an early goal advantage, Atletico had the advantage in the first leg. However, Borussia Dortmund's performance in the second half also shone brightly, and when they returned to play at home in the second leg, they still had a chance to turn the tables around.
