"When we plant lotus roots, we must ensure a certain spacing, the horizontal distance is generally 3 to 4 meters, and the vertical distance is 4 to 5 meters. The 'tail' of the lotus root seed must be cocked so that it can 'breathe' and grow faster and better in the later stage. Ouyang Liang, a planting technician, said.
In order to ensure the yield and quality of lotus roots, Sanjia Village specially introduced "Space Lotus No. 36" for planting this year. Compared with the traditional varieties, this new variety has the advantages of long growth period, many flowers, large growth, high seed setting rate and good quality, and is a veritable "excellent student" in the lotus root industry. Ouyang Liang said: "It is predicted that one acre of lotus root can bloom about 7,000 lotus flowers, and in the middle of summer, the lotus garden in Sanjia Village will become a sea of flowers." A pond of lotus root "opens" an industry, and an industry drives the economy of one side. Since 2018, Sanjia Village has relied on the local water and soil advantages, explored and practiced step by step, starting from 30 acres of experimental fields to try to plant lotus roots, and develop a "lotus industry" with local characteristics. "The soil in Sanjia Village has a high content of organic matter, which is suitable for lotus root cultivation. Our original intention of planting lotus flowers is to drive economic development and help villagers increase their income. According to Zhou Wenbiao, a member of the village committee of the village, the lotus root planting area in the village has expanded to hundreds of acres, from lotus flowers, lotus seeds to deep processing, not only revitalized the land resources, but also created a continuous lotus pond scenery, attracting many tourists to check in, out of a "lotus as the medium, to the lotus village" of rural revitalization road. In November 2023, the village was selected as the first batch of typical villages in Guangdong Province's "Millions of Thousands Project".
