Stage 1 - Group Stage Rules
In both men's and women's singles, the top 16 are seeded, while the 48 players in the group stage are divided into 16 groups of three players each, and the groups are drawn according to the serpentine position. Let's take the national table tennis women's singles as an example to analyze:
The No. 1~4 seeds (Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu, Wang Yidi, Chen Meng) are divided into the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th groups respectively. They are paired with players ranked 29~32 (Shan Xiaona, Bharat, Chen Siyu, Akula) and 33~36 ranked players (Diaconu, Du Kaiser, Bayo, Zhu Chengzhu), and these 8 players are randomly drawn to see which group they fall into.
The 5th~8th seeds are randomly assigned to the 5th~8th group, and the 25th~28th ranked players and the 37th~40th ranked players will also be placed in these 4 groups, and these 8 players will be randomly drawn to determine the group. After the group is divided, each group will play 3 single round-robin matches, 4 matches, and then determine the final points according to the relationship between winners and losers and scores, and the one with the highest score will advance to the second stage of the knockout round.
If in the end, Shan Xiaona and Du Kaiser were assigned to the first group where Sun Yingsha was through the draw, then after the final 3 rounds of round-robin, Sun Yingsha, Shan Xiaona, and Du Kaiser can only have one person advance to the knockout round, which is still quite cruel, and the probability of an upset has increased, which is not very friendly to national table tennis players.
Stage 2 - Knockout Rules
At the end of the first stage, the winner of Sun Yingsha's Group 1 will be divided into the 1/4 of the top half, Wang Manyu's Group 2 will be divided into the 4/4 of the bottom half, the winner of Wang Yidi's Group 3 will be divided into the 2/4 of the top half, and the winner of Chen Meng's Group 4 will be divided into the 3/4 of the top half.
The winners of the other groups 5~16 will be randomly assigned to any of them.
In other words, if Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu successfully advance to the knockout round, the two will guard the 1/4 zone and the 4/4 zone respectively, and they will not meet until the final. And if Wang Yidi and Chen Meng successfully advance to the knockout round, one will be in the 2/4 zone and the other in the 3/4 zone, and the two will only meet in the final stage.
