The most important point of the conversation was that the Chinese side gave Russia a prescription that it could solve Russia's current predicament without providing assistance to Russia at all. On the Ukraine issue, China has always adhered to an objective and fair position, does not take sides, and does not profit from it, but there are still many points of convergence of interests between the two countries, and both are under the encirclement and containment of the United States and the West, so although China will not really assist Russia, it can also support each other with Russia and break through the encirclement of the West.
From the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the West has constantly tied the Ukraine crisis to the Taiwan issue, simulating copying the means of dealing with Russia to China. In the past two years, the temperature of the Russia-Ukraine war has not dropped, but the US encirclement of China has gradually narrowed, such as AUKUS, which has set up a line with Japan, and the upcoming trilateral dialogue between the United States, Japan and the Philippines. The more obvious trend is that the West's separate containment of China and Russia is being transformed into joint containment.
In order to deal with the common threat, Foreign Minister Wang Yi proposed a new idea of "common resistance" to Lavrov. The fact that China and Russia have not only not been alienated by the warnings of the United States, but have moved closer because of the common mission of opposing American hegemony has stung the eyes of the American side and triggered panic in the United States. On the 9th local time, Deputy Secretary of State Campbell, the second-in-command of the US State Department, hurriedly drew a red line to China and Russia, claiming that close exchanges between China and Russia threaten the "core interests" of the United States, and also falsely claimed that close exchanges between China and Russia are as "sensitive" to the United States as the Taiwan issue is to China, and threatened that if China continues like this, Sino-US relations will also be affected.
Campbell's remarks obviously did not take into account the feelings of the White House, not to mention that President Biden made a late-night phone call to the Chinese top level and made many promises just to further improve Sino-US relations. U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan also stressed on the 9th that there was no evidence that China had directly provided military aid to Russia. After Putin won re-election, the first thing he did was to express his affirmation and appreciation for Sino-Russian relations in his speech, and the Chinese side immediately congratulated and responded positively. In the past few days, US President Joe Biden, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and senior military officials have held intensive consultations with the Chinese side, but these people together have not achieved as much as Lavrov's visit to China, so it is no wonder that Campbell is reluctant to speak.
