On the afternoon of April 7, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen (Janet L. Yellen) visited Peking University and had a discussion with teachers and students of the National Institute of Development (hereinafter referred to as the "National Development Institute"), accompanied by Nicholas Burns, U.S. Ambassador to China. Liao Min, Vice Minister of Finance, Gong Qihuang, President of Peking University, Dong Zhiyong, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Vice President and Director of General Affairs, Fang Fang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President, and Jiang Guohua, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, met with Yellen and her delegation in Chengze Garden.

Gong Qihuang welcomed Yellen and her delegation to Peking University. He pointed out that Yellen's visit to China and Peking University is of great significance to promoting higher education exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States.

Yellen thanked Peking University for its warm reception and said that Peking University is a top university in China and has played a pivotal role in China's history, and she is very much looking forward to communicating with Peking University faculty and students.

Subsequently, Yellen had a discussion with the representatives of teachers and students of the Peking University Development Institute.

The professors' symposium was chaired by Huang Yiping, President of the National Development Institute, who introduced the background and development vision of the Institute, as well as the achievements made in the three major fields of teaching, scientific research and think tank since its establishment 30 years ago.

Yellen still remembers her visit to the Institute in 1998 and said she was happy to be back again. She pointed out that the National Development Institute is both a teaching institution and a think tank, and has provided many unique policy suggestions for China's reform and development over the years, and has played a positive role in China's economic development. Yellen, who has worked in academia for many years, is keen to communicate with China's academia and said that strengthening understanding and communication between the United States and China will help promote a healthy and stable economic relationship between the two countries.

The two sides had a frank and in-depth dialogue on hot topics in the economic field between China and the United States.

The student exchange meeting was chaired by Lei Xiaoyan, director of the Academic Committee of the National Development Institute, and the students of the National Development Institute asked Yellen questions about women's career development, the U.S. fiscal deficit, China-US economic and trade relations, and youth career development. Yellen shared her insights on these issues, and encouraged the students to study hard, be innovative, actively explore global issues, and make their own contributions to promoting exchanges and cooperation between the United States and China.

It is reported that Janet Yellen has served as the 78th Secretary of the Treasury of the United States since 2021, the first female Treasury Secretary in the history of the United States. She has taught and researched economics for many years and served as chair of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2018. In June 1998, the inaugural opening ceremony of the International Master of Business Administration (BiMBA) program of Peking University, sponsored by the China Center for Economic Research of Peking University (the predecessor of the National Development Institute), was inaugurated.
