The sustainability of the leather industry has been enhanced

According to the recent International Leather Maker (ILM) Green Innovator Survey, the majority of those working in the leather industry believe that the leather industry has become more sustainable or more in line with the concept of "green" development over the past year.

In 2023, ILM launched the first Green Innovator Survey, asking companies involved in the leather industry about their sustainability issues.

In the first question of the survey, ILM asked respondents: "Do you think the tanning industry has become more environmentally friendly (more sustainable or environmentally conscious) in the past year?"

This question sheds light on some of the difficulties behind assessing sustainability in the tanning industry and addressing sustainability improvements. Whereas, sustainability is an umbrella term that covers a wide range of areas, including carbon footprint, social responsibility, environmental impact, and more.

However, particularly in terms of environmental impact, the leather industry has grown more than ever in the last few years, driven by a growing number of regulations and the efforts of industry organisations such as the Leather Working Group to help tanners meet the requirements of local and export markets.

The vast majority of respondents (84%) believe that the industry has seen an increase in sustainability or environmental awareness over the past year, with 4% saying the industry will not be sustainable and 12% saying there has been no significant change from before. Over the years, many large companies in the industry have been continuously optimizing and refining their processes and continuing to be committed to sustainable development, but the change is gradual and slow. New products need to be developed and produced to meet limits, emissions reductions need to be met, and policies need to be updated as expectations change. Sustainable development is an ever-changing goal, and there always seem to be new challenges, and practitioners in this industry have been committed to innovation and development, and are committed to making greater and more contributions to green and low-carbon environmental protection.
