Industry-leading precision Campagnolo launches the first power crankset HPPM

Two months ago, we were surprised to find the new Campagnolo Super Record HPPM power meter crankset hidden in the woods at the UCI Cross Country World Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic. Now, the long-rumored and long-awaited Campy power meter is finally here. Riders familiar with the SRM x Campagnolo power meter option will notice a lot of similarities. However, the new Campy HPPM Disc Jaw Power Meter uses a higher precision power measurement technology with a larger number of strain gauges than we have seen before, delivering industry-leading accuracy at a lower weight......

This is how Campagnolo describes its claw-based power meter: High Precision Power Measurement. In fact, despite the fact that its crank arms are clearly labeled as Campy Super Record cranksets, the Italian component manufacturer simply refers to them as Campagnolo HPPM power meter cranks. There's a philosophical bias to this: they're focusing more on in-house technology than just updating their expensive top-of-the-line road car electronic shifting kits.

What new technologies are in it?

Currently, there are 16 built-in strain gauges and 1 gyroscope arranged in 4 separate Wheatstone bridges. This makes it possible to obtain a highly accurate torque value during a 360° ride. You can enjoy temperature compensation and get high-frequency data sampling. Angular velocity and torque signals are measured virtually every 5 milliseconds, and a frequency of 200 Hz provides more accurate data on the power curve.

These Wheatstone bridges are unique in that the most accurate crank power meters (e.g. Infocrank) tend to have 1 Wheatstone bridge and 4 strain gauges on each crank arm to compensate for temperature and ensure accuracy. The most accurate jaw power meters (e.g., SRM) tend to have 1-2 Wheatstone bridges on the jaws, each with 4 strain gauges to ensure accuracy. Campy placed 4 Wheatstone bridges around the claws (presumably on each of the jaws that connect the platters), for a total of 16 strain gauges.

The resulting power measurement accuracy error is claimed to be only +/-1% (up to 4000 W power measurement), which puts the Campagnolo HPPM power meter crankset on par with the flagship.

Details of the Campy Super Record HPPM Power Meter Crankset

The entire Campagnolo Super Record HPPM power meter crankset is reported to weigh just 656g (172.5mm with 45/29T platter, spindle and crank bolts). That's just 38g heavier than the Super Record standard crankset without a power meter. Or use a similar-looking SRM Campagnolo power meter crank with compression discs, which reduces the weight of 780g by 124g.

The Super Record HPPM crank maintains a constant Q of 148mm, which is 2.5mm wider than the SR's standard crank. (The bottom bracket is still 17mm narrower and the U-value is 130.8mm, which minimizes crank wear). It uses the same new 121/88mm 4-bolt asymmetrical disc as the Campagnolo Super Record Wireless as part of the compression crankset, while supporting the latest 12-speed cassette and a minimum of 10T cassette.

My Campy's wireless compatibility

The latest version of the My Campy 3.0 app, available for iOS or Android, allows you to quickly calibrate your new power meter and check your battery's charging condition. According to Campagnolo, the HPPM power meter can run for five weeks or 2,500 km on a single charge. By using the same dual-hole magnetic USB cable as the Super Record Wireless, the required power can be fully charged in 3 hours and 45 minutes. The lithium-ion battery inside can be replaced with a Campagnolo.

The Campagnolo HPPM power meter is IP67 waterproof. It is connected via 2.4GHz ANT+ as well as Bluetooth. It is available in North America, the EU/UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan with Campagnolo certification.

What's different from the one we saw at the CX World Championship?

Interestingly, the prototype we saw on that shiny gold Colnago G3X CX bike from Ryan Kamp in February was clearly not quite the same. The prototype used by Kamp appears to have included the new HPPM claw power meter. But they still use the crank of the previous generation with a slight bump, which is still seen on the current Record & Chorus carbon crank. Kamp's crank also uses a smaller diameter bottom bracket common to low-end cranksets.

But the most interesting thing is that the photo on the back of the new HPPM power meter provided by Campagnolo shows that the Super Record crank arm is mounted to the disc jaw via a 4-tooth bolt. It seems like it's just timing with a hollow pin that runs parallel to the small cut-out in the carbon crank. This suggests that more crank arm options (and a slightly lower price) will be an easy addition to Campagnolo in the future.

Campagnolo HPPM Power Meter – Pricing, Configurations, and Availability

The new Campagnolo HPPM power meter crankset is priced at US$2,449/€2,240 and is paired with a pair of Super Record hollow UD carbon crank arms, an Ultra-Torque titanium shaft and a USB ceramic bottom bracket. In this price range, you can choose between 170, 172.5 or 175mm crank arms and the latest SRW 45/29, 48/32 or 50/34T platter combinations. You'll also get a dedicated magnetic USB charging cable that can charge your Super Record wireless electronic shifter.

A complete Super Record Wireless shifting kit has already set you back 5,200 euros. Removing the standard crank would save around 950/1000 euros, which would have cost you a whopping 6900/6440 euros for the Campagnolo Super Record Wireless gearshift kit with a power meter. We've confirmed the pricing of this kit with Campagnolo, and the new HPPM power meter is available to consumers starting today. We will update the information as soon as we receive a response.

Finally, keep in mind that Super Record doesn't seem to make a clear categorization in the naming of the Campagnolo HPPM. Read on what you're looking for, and it's not surprising to see HPPM claw power meters on other crank arms in the future. Maybe the jaw power meter will be on the slightly heavier, cheaper Record or Chorus crank arms, or maybe I'm guessing it's going to be on the Ekar's crank arms.
