After a regular dinner, he began to drink water and choked, followed by weakness in his limbs, difficulty swallowing, and even respiratory arrest two days later. What disease is so menacing?
In this issue, we invite Liang Heng, vice president of medical treatment of Zhejiang Mingzhou Rehabilitation Hospital, to take you to know the rare disease - Guillain-Barré syndrome and its recovery road.
01
Symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome
01 Muscle weakness
Muscle weakness is one of the typical symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome, which is caused by the invasion of peripheral nerves, usually starting from the muscles of the lower limbs, from the bottom to the top, and spreading to the respiratory muscles, causing the patient to have difficulty breathing.
02 Facial paralysis
Invasion of cranial nerves may cause facial paralysis.
03 Dysarthria, choking on water, and difficulty swallowing
Patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome have a violation of the nerves in the throat, which can lead to dysarthria, accompanied by symptoms such as choking on water, difficulty swallowing, and weakness of expectoration.
04Atypical symptoms
In addition to the above three typical symptoms, Guillain-Barre syndrome has some atypical symptoms, including autonomic dysfunction, excessive sweating of the hands and feet, or excessive dryness.
In addition, some patients may also have sensory disturbances, such as decreased or absent "glove-sock" sensation in the distal extremities, and a feeling of "gloved" and "sockish" on physical examination.
Some patients with sensory disorders will also have a "ant walking sensation", always feeling that there are ants crawling on the body, similar to the sensation of pins and needles, burning sensation and other paresthesias.
02
Pathogenesis of Guillain-Barre syndrome
In terms of the onset time, Dean Liang said that Guillain-Barre syndrome occurs all year round, with summer and autumn being the most common.
In terms of the incidence group, Dean Liang said that people of any age can get this disease, and it is most common in young men in clinical practice.
Guillain-Barre syndrome is mostly caused by viral infections, such as influenza A, influenza B, coronavirus infection, etc., but there is no need to panic, not all viral infections will develop into Guillain-Barre syndrome.
The incidence of Guillain-Barre syndrome is extremely low, only about 1 to 2 people per 100,000 people, and if you have symptoms, it is recommended to go to the neurology department of the hospital for investigation.
