In the title "Grain Trade and Transportation in the Ancient Greek City-States", Master Chungpyeong mentions:

-- How big is a ship with a carrying capacity of 30 tons? Obviously, 30 tons of grain should have proper space for storage. So, how much space does 30 tons of grain need to occupy? The specific gravity of wheat is slightly larger than that of water, and we take a larger space according to the specific gravity equal to water, which is equivalent to 30 cubic meters of space. How big is a 30 cubic meter cabin?—— how much space does your bedroom have? If your bedroom is 12 square meters (4 meters long and 3 meters wide) and 2.5 meters high, then the volume is exactly 30 cubic meters, and you can hold 30 tons of grain. Could it be that the ancient Greek three-decker galleys had only as much space to store food as your bedroom?

- Obviously, neither the bedroom of the Western historian or the pseudo-historian Fan Tiao's bedroom, nor the bedroom of the "Three Cannons" Master Chungpei's house, can probably squeeze in the "170 famous oarsmen" carrying the oars—unless they put them in like canned sardines. Some people may say that Columbus's flagship when he discovered the Americas had a displacement of only 120 tons. How could the ancient Greeks have ships with a deadweight of 300 tons?—— in the late Spring and Autumn Period (476 years ago), the Wu State crossed the sea to conquer Qi, including the Wu-Yue hegemony, and the Chinese ancestors had already built very large ships. Wu's "big wing" boat, 27 meters long and 3.6 meters wide, carried 91 warriors and oarsmen, and it can be seen that its volume has already exceeded 100 cubic meters. Europe is not without big ships. Before Columbus went to sea, the largest ships in Europe had a deadweight of more than 1,000 tons, which was not much worse than Zheng He's treasure ships. However, such ships may not be suitable for ocean voyages, and can only flutter in the "ponds" of the Mediterranean. As for Columbus, since the technology has been reached, who would gamble on a big ship for an uncertain voyage?—— which proves that Europe in the time of Columbus had ships with a displacement far greater than 120 tons.

According to Master Zhongping's calculations, Athens imports 547.5 million catties of grain a year, and 4562.5 ships are needed to meet the needs of transporting grain from Bulgaria for four trips a year. Obviously, we do not need to assume that the Greek transport ships can carry up to 300 tons, because then the number of ships required would drop to 228. Now it is only necessary to assume that the average deadweight of the Greek ships was 120 tons, then Master Chungpyeong needed 570 ships.
